Scot, are you with or against the independence of Scotland?

I have a feeling that you will vote with your two hands for the independence of Scotland! Laughing

In my lifetime I have seen the Empire dissolve. When I was born, I was a sub ject of King George VI, who was also Emperor of India. Then one by one tjhe colonies cast loose. Scotland is on the same path, although its ties with London were not those of a typical colony.

The jingoists and Empire Loyalists in Scotland and elsewhere have problems accepting this, but we know that History has its own logic !

Oh, Scot, it seems the history of 1292 will repeat itself between Scotland and England. Laughing

This is all the fault of John Balliol and Robert Bruce to let King Edward to interfere in the internal affairs of Scotland. The Scottish town of Berwick was wiped out from the map in 1295.

"Edward spared no one, whatever the age or sex, and for two days streams of blood flowed from the bodies of the slain, for in his tyrannous rage he ordered 7,500 souls of both sexes to be massacred...So that mills could be turned round by the flow of their blood."

Berwick is at peace now - but in England, although the county of Berwickshire is in Scotland.

I would love to travel to Scotland someday. Very Happy

I've been to the Philippines so many times. Every Philippine city is starting to look alike - sari sari stores, tricycles, jeepneys, etc. (Except for Vigan and Baguio, of course.) Neutral

It would be nice to see bagpipes, kilts, pubs and hot Scottish girls. Wink

We caredfully control the number of Californians allowed in. We call it "influx control". We have enough crazies of our own and do not need to import any more.

You need not worry.

I am not in a hurry to see Scotland.

I want to go to Amsterdam first. Wink

The article (link in the OP) opens with Alan Bennet's quote from 'The History Boys', but the quote is older than that. I find it interesting how history has been viewed and defined:

History is just one damn thing after another.
Winston Churchill? Arnold Toynbee? Edna St Vincent Millay?

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
George Santayana

Hegel was right when he said that we learn from history that man can never learn anything from history.
George Bernard Shaw

'History,' Stephen said, 'is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake'.
James Joyce

History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon.
Napoleon Bonaparte

History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.
Winston Churchill

And let us not forget...

Turn back the clock, and you're history.
Jean-Claude Van Damme (Timecop)

You say history considers me dead. Who am I to argue with history?
James T. Kirk (Star Trek Generations)

Yeah, well, history is gonna change.
