Really? I've been in plenty of Chinese homes that have a (I must say immaculately clean) squatter.

The new upper class homes usually have the western throne, the middle class and below have squatters. It all depends on who your 'chilln wit'.

my ex-gf in kunming lived in a nice, modern apartment complex.
when family came to visit, they used the squattie to slaughter chickens.
(and i have pictures to prove it.)

@ johnpartee - Ive been in Chinese homes that dont have ANY toilet, let alone a squatter. Two different buckets around the back of the buildings.

@ nathrodgers - Im not sure my voice and opinion will be a popular one, but I think you might have to just 'man up' a little. You did say in your original post that the photos looked the same, but were better? Im guessing the photos might be of another teachers apartment and the photo you saw was a 'lived in and subject the the personal touch' type thing. The difference between someone showing the photo of an empty unit compared to a furnished show home. Just a guess?

If it wasnt clean, fair enough. But cleanliness compared to a nice single dwelling apartment in the UK is going to be quite different methinks. The bathroom set up is quite standard, shower over the squatter is very common, and unless the contract you were offered specifically mentioned western toilets etc I dont think its a big deal. If all FT accomodation is similar, but have been subject to the personal touch of someone staying long term, I dont think you could, or even should, do anything.

But thats just me. Ive stayed and worked in less developed places and can easily cope with simple living conditions. If the job, city and working environment tick all my boxes I wouldnt give a hoot about anything else really.

edited to add - just gone back to your original post and note they showed photos of a bath ... I would question the bath part ... but if everything else is good I wouldnt give up the right job in the right place for the sake of a bathtub.
