What is your "Thai 32"? Should we all have one to work in Vietnam?

Relax my long lost friend. Take a couple of deep breathes. You'll be amazed at how that will help calm your mind. No one can be grammatically correct ALL of the time my fellow professional TEFLer. Not even someone like me who has been studying up on my grammar.

How are things in Vietnam? I'm heading there on Monday. Prof. Gringo will give me a tour. Perhaps you could give some advice as well?

Good talking with you again amigo. And if you have any information on a university gig, feel free to share.

Yeah, we all make mistakes- but I spend all day correcting subject verb agreement errors in my student's essays. I don't expect to see them in university teacher queries on Dave's.

Things are great. My advice to those wanting to teach university here is to rethink the question. There really is only one university that pays decently, and it has peculiar and rare hiring. I know of people making good money for corporations and decent money in institutes. ACET is supposed to be good, and they are hiring. You won't get much holiday time from unis here.

If you aggregate pension, end of contract bonuses, holiday time and overtime, Korea still has better uni gigs.

But here the weather is fine, the food is great, and if you love insanely frenetic cities- HCMC is a good place to be.

Thanks for the information professional.

Why do you think VN is a "paradise"? As others have already mentioned, even those who "love" the place find it annoying and challenging on a daily basis.

What has the Prof. really told you?

He said there are TEFLing jobs everywhere! But he is holding out until September because he wants to teach adults not kids. Plus the women love him or so he told me.

Plus 18 to 20 bucks an hour. Paradise my friend, paradise. Cool

Well, yes US$18 per hour and up is certainly possible (although how many hours will you be teaching?),

but to say "there are jobs everywhere" and "the women love me" are such broad over-generalizations as to be almost completely meaningless nonsensical illogical fallacies,

i.e. All women in the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam between the ages of 18 and 80 love me and there are schools on every street of every municipality and hamlet throughout the land begging for English teachers.

The same goes for the use of the word "paradise". Has the Prof. not mentioned any negative aspects of the place? Is he in HCMC, HN or elsewhere?

At any rate, I don't really want to rain on your parade, but having a more balanced view of the place might be something to consider.

Meanwhile, in spite of the atrocious grammar, punctuation and spelling the OP should be tended to as well...

Unlike Korea there are not many universities that hire foreigners in VN. The one university mentioned above is RMIT, a private uni from Melbourne, Australia. I have heard of people teaching at state unis, but this seems to be very rare, rather then the norm.

Your best bet would be to find an online list of unis, and then contact the most interesting looking ones directly with a general enquiry.

Look at the context of the post. He may just mean "school" and be using the word "university". If a poster takes the time to read the site, he will already know most of the answers to his questions and can then ask more refined and targeted questions. He should also be able to self assess his skills, for example just doing a copy and paste of his post (or any of his writings) into a document file for a grammar check, and determine whether or not he is qualified to teach in at the university level. Maybe he is just asking about jobs, not specifically universities. Or maybe he is just trying to stir the pot. It is unlikely that anyone qualified to work at a university would post on an ESL site with a message of this nature.

Guys, we have Spaniards, Italians, Germans, Filipinos, Malaysians, Nigerians, (you name it, we have it) teaching English over here, not to mention our native speaking backpackers. If you want to scramble around getting an hour here and an hour there, you can do it. That's what it mostly is. If you are serious, you are one of a small number, and it will be pretty obvious to everyone.

I don't want to pile on EFLeducator [and I'm not trying to be mean], but you might want to drop it down a gear or two. Seriously. I'm all for enthusiasm and the power of positive thinking etc,, but why don't you wait until you actually get here before classifying this country as a "paradise"?

I personally wouldn't categorize Vietnam as a "paradise" and I've lived here for about three years and been from one end of this country to the other. Indeed, I don't know if it's just me, but I wouldn't make such a bold claim about any country to anyone unless I'd spent quite a bit of time in said country and experienced it myself. That goes double when it comes to posting on an internet board which is often frequented by regular posters who have lived here for several years, are married to locals, speak the lingo etc.

As I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you are not trying to "stir the pot", I wish you all the best with the move! I personally believe that Vietnam, as far as TEFLing destinations go, is a pretty good option and the good things about working and living here, IMHO, generally outweigh the bad. Vietnam is not for everybody but most people seem to adjust pretty well to living here and make a good go of it.

In regards to the "18 and 20 bucks an hour", it's possible to live here quite comfortably on that and it's not too difficult to get these kind of jobs either. But, like Sigmoid said, with your qualifications you should be aiming much higher. Why don't you contact ACET, the British Council or, in particular, RMIT? Much better conditions there than the typical language mills Cool.

In regards to the women 'loving you', I guess it depends on what you are after and with whom Wink. Personally, (although I admit there are some stunning Vietnamese women walking around), I prefer Western women as I just find the cultural and language barriers less problematic. True, there are also plenty of expat women out there, but most of them seem to arrive with a boyfriend/husband already in tow so, for me, the dating scene here hasn't been that great Crying or Very sad. Maybe I'm just hanging out in the wrong places. Or maybe I've been too fussy. Or, another distinct possibility, is that maybe I'm just an ugly sod with no 'game' Embarassed.

Anyway, like I said, that's just been my experience and many, many people here have found and built successful cross-cultural or expat-expat relationships and fair play to them! I just happen to not be one of them Confused.

I thought the average time on a job was about 3 months, and average time spent in VN before moving back out was about 6 months. Anybody have some better information on this? Not sure how to define success over here, but that may be success to the folks who create those averages. Sometimes I wish I could just go from nation to nation with no long term goals, but I always seem to get too easily settled.

Not sure about those numbers. I know it's a tiny sample, but half the people who I did my CELTA with and who decided to stay in Vietnam are still here three years later. Most of the new teachers where I work also tend to stay around for a bit. There's always a lot of people coming and going, but this is TEFL after all and people get into it to experience new places Cool.

Paradise surely has less trash all over the place.

1.5-2 years for non-backpackers seems to be the norm ime.
