I know a guy in the UK who will give you an MOT certificate, a certificate of road worthiness for those of you from outside the UK, for any car, regardless of condition. He is authorised by the government to issue those certificates. He will issue you the certificate regardless of the condition of your car, so long as you pay the required fee. The certificate is 100% genuine. Does that mean the car is roadworthy or that the insurance company would be obliged to pay out on a claim for that car on the grounds that the paperwork is legal?

The MOT just states the car was roadworthy on the day of testing. Ride around with bald tyres and you can get nicked regardless of the MOT.

I know someone who is non-native with a real visa ... which was secured by using a fake transcript and university degree when applying for the visa in Hong Kong. His current employer did that, but finding another one to do it may not be easy ... he has met a girl he wants to follow to ShenZhen and his 'love story' could be at risk if he cant secure a visa. Not a good situation to be in IMO

I make it six countries - UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, US and New Zealand.
(MOT cert is valid for the instant it is issued. It will always be the driver's responsibility to ensure car is roadworthy.
If you kill someone through bald tires don't waste your breath telling the judge about your 'valid' MOT).
Re job. I say it can be done, although there has been a progressive tightening up over the years I've been involved in ESL.
This is why some long serving non natives are continuing to teach.
They probably wouldn't get in if they applied afresh now.
Look at the less desirable areas, but get applying NOW!
No amount of input on Dave's will get you a job.
Do not however, come on a tourist visa no matter how desperate you are.

Hey China! Here's the short summary:
- Non native speaker, Norway.
- No TEFL Certificate whatsover (This is the easy part though, no problem to get)
- White, but not good looking.
- No teaching experience, not in particular a lot of work experience either.
- Will have a bachelor "soon", but its a useless one (Japanese), but I also have the option to finish up a bachelor in English by taking two additional courses (Unfortunately only offered spring semesters...). I can also opt for taking a one year course which basically gives me the certificate to teach certain subjects in my country (English is one of them), which is offered for students which have finished their bachelor's degree.

It's people like you what cause unrest. If you are not a native speaker or a real teacher, or even very good looking, why don't you just butt out? Your sort give our humble profession a bad name. I mean, you don't see me applying to be chief drum beater in a Viking longboat, or whatever it is you Norwegians are good for. Just go visit China if you're so wet for it, spend a few eurodollars, get some and go home. It is the bread and butter of many of us to go to places like China and make a living on our native wit. Even if you're English is excellent it can't be up to par with a native's.

Excuse, me but despite or perhaps because of your white skin helping you along , you are basically an impostor and a poseur. It's not my fault the Chinese don't want to learn Norsk. deal with it!

You say you studied Japanese; why not visit Japan? Visit. Don't embarrass yourself and my profession by pretending you have knowledge to impart. Sorry to be so harsh, but you come off as way too happy-go-lucky.

At least I hope it's a joke.

I'm joking - to an extent, and racism against Aryan Vikings is racism nonetheless, I admit. But really, why should Norwegians horn in on our gig? Let quagles raid England from a longboat, and let guys and gals from the 'right' five nations, who actually have degrees and teaching skills, go and teach English - n'est pas?

He might, but for sure a hundred thousand Chinese professional English teachers are. What they need Quaggles for? Aren't these good citizens entitled to do a job they trained for? Studied hard for years for?

And if the Chinese prefer a native speaker, that's a boon for us native speakers. Praise be to Allah!

And if the Chinese can't discern between a native speaker and a mere paleface from the Arctic, then let's learn'm different!

So many of us, Chinese professionals and native speakers, actually took the time to learn how to do this job properly. What right does some adventurer have to burden himself on students of English?

I know it seems easy to teach a class of children basic English vocab or phrases, but I have seen that there are some people who cant even do that! Not to save their lives!

Yes, perhaps Quaggles would do. He knows more English than most Chinese under 20, but why should he when there are plenty of serious candidates who need these jobs to live and support dependents?

I knew another Norwegian who was a bartender back home, and quit his Oslo bar-tending job to do the grand tour. In his socialist Utopian homeland, he explained he'd have no trouble getting another job or going on the dole upon his return. I gather that in Norway with it's population of what? 35,000? (not a real country like China or America) - they all live by sucking on the government teat, and it was this guy's good fortune to have the job of guiding the nipple into their collective mouths. Nice for him, but how about us Yanks, and Chinese folk, whose only life choices are work or starve?

I can't go work in the Eurozone, so I think mere ESL adventurers should stay out of the rest of the world. My bartender friend was in fact just touring, I would have rather resented it if he was looking to compete for a position I qualify for.

Don't confuse "native speaker" with "foreigner who holds the correct passport." Plenty of "native speakers" who were born and raised in another country whose English is awful but they get hired here anyway. If Quagles speaks as well as he writes he's already one up on many of the "native speakers" already teaching here. Plenty of jobs to go around.

Sure Javelin, I mean teachers should be native speakers, have a B.A. or B.S., at least, have some sort of CELTA or TESL certificate and even a spot of experience. Of course native citizens of a country with similar qualifications ( I mean like Chinese professional teachers who are near fluent) ought to be able to make a living as well. There's room for them, but not Viking good-time charlies.

(sigh) I looked over the OP again and Quagles irritates me more than ever, but to be fair he does seem ready to get a teaching certificate:

He studied Japanese? Was he planning to be a sushi chef? Such frivolity! And I thought Scandinavians were a dour folk!
This is the annoying bit:

If I actually wanted to be a teacher, this wouldn't really have been an issue. Then I'd just go and take the additional year, and get my teachers license. The problem is while I DO want to be a teacher, I don't want to be a teacher in Norway for more than a few years, I really want out of here. I don't want to get stuck as a teacher in Norway who isn't able to get out. Then I might as well just go for a better paying career and live with the hope that I would get picked up by an international firm, thus my ticket out of the country.

So Quagles lives in a country I or any Chinese would cut off her left arm to live in , and it's not good enough for him!?

I really want to go to China and teach but I fear that the only options ill get is shady jobs who won't offer me a visa, underpaid jobs due to not being a native speaker, illegal jobs and so on. Location, while it of course naturally matters a bit, I don't mind being stuck in the sticks. (As long as they speak Mandarin)

I just can't for the life of me decide if its worth the risk or not, I feel like I'm already in a bad enough position as it is. I've made enough mistakes in my life, I've made far too many of them, and I don't want to do it yet again. Life has definently had its ups and downs, and I don't want this to be another disappointment. This time I want to make it right, and to be sure that my future path will take me somewhere ill be satisified. I'd love to teach ESL, but as a non native, and with the rest of my situation as I described, it just makes me wonder if I'm gonna be able to get a job, and to get a job that won't leave me empty handed.
Blah blah blah, yada yada. Well, welcome to my world Quagle, you privileged child. But you will be involved in shady dealings, you will be taken advantage of and you will return home empty-handed, save for your edumacation in the school of hard knocks. That's life in capitalist countries like the U.S. and China. If you were not such a naif, you'd know that while China claims to be communist, it's market is in reality freer (and certainly less regualtion bound) than the European Union's. Stay home, my little lamb, and go on being a sheep because innocents like you are soon mutton in harsher climes.

Don't pay too much attention to this Quagles.
Get applying and let the market decide.
Your timing is good for a start after winter break but you really should have something sorted by the end of November.
Don't know why a Norwegian raises so much ire when there are loads of teachers from outside the SIX repeat SIX preferred countries doing the same job as a native speaker from within the six.
I know Filipinos get paid less but that is just the normal racist bias.

you'd prefer getting stuck as a teacher in china who isn't able to get out?

few are able to make it past basic oral engrish. there is essentially no
career path. for most, it's teach a few years, and then move on to
the next adventure. your experiences in china won't necessarily make you
attractive to 'real' employers.

The guy has a degree in Japanese. He is right. It's fairly useless. A degree in the language of a country that has been economically stagnant for the last 20 years and is a demographic disaster.

Teaching English wouldn't be a step down for him. Cool
