Hi everyone,

I hope someone can give me some advice on where I might find work in Antigua, Guatemala.

First, let me tell you why I want to specifically live in Antigua and not other cities I have visited in Guatemala. I went there last year to study Spanish. I met a guy. He still works in Antigua. We have been talking ever since. I want to go there to live for a while, just to see if there is potential for a real relationship. Really lame I know..........and I'm old enough to know better (2Cool...........but I just care! I must go! lol

So, I have a bachelor's degree in ESL and master's in education. I am certified ESL k-12 in the U.S which is where I currently work. I have experience teaching overseas, but not in Latin America. Most of my experience is k-12 in the U.S public education system.

I realize I'm not exactly going to be saving money in Guatemala, but I do need enough to cover local expenses while I am there. I don't have money saved up, but I don't have debt either. I know there are k-12 international schools in Guatemala City, but that is not where I want to go. To be honest, I am sick of teaching k-12 anyway. I would rather teach in some type of program like the Maximo Nivel TESOL certification program, even though older posts do not speak well of Maximo (at least not the Maximo in Peru). I am wondering though, is Maximo Nivel the only TESOL certification program where I could maybe land a job in Antigua? I emailed Maximo my resume, etc. Now I am looking for other places to apply as well.

I have found job openings for various nonprofit organizations. However, my problem with getting a job with those organizations so far is that my Spanish skills are not good enough. I'd say I'm a LOW intermediate.

I will appreciate in advice any of you may have about finding a job in Antigua. Even if it doesn't work out with my guy, maybe it will be a good experience anyway. I just hope I can find a job so I will be able to find out! Thank you to anyone who has any suggestions Smile -Melonie

Have you considered working online? Then you can live wherever you want.

Hmmmm, I have actually not thought of that before. Good idea. I will have to look into this. Any suggestions for reputable online teaching companies?

If you speak Spanish, then Open English is good for working online.

MN seems decent, you might be able to get a job as a TEFL trainer. They pay 1000 to 1800 usd, for TEFL trainers. Try contacting Ken.

teflcertificationabroad.com might have other TEFL programmes that you could try working or teaching at.

I just stumbled across this, http://www.interexchange.org/foundation/grant-funding/christianson-grant If you get a job in Guatemala, they could give you up to 10K usd.
