Looking at another forum

http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=60

I was pondering on this question.

If you are British and work at some low-level job in Do-Buy you are an EXPAT. If you come from the Philippines or Bangladesh and do the same you are a TCN !!

TCN is not that commonly used outside of Saudi. I learned it on this board, not in the other Gulf countries. It may be Britspeak... ??

Dear scot47,

So, do you think Brits should also be TCNs - or should Filipinos or Bangladeshis be expats.

WHat REALLY matters, of course, is the salary; what you're called (and I've been called a LOT of names) is irrelevant Very Happy.

Regards,
John

The first place that I worked in the Gulf - in Oman - the Filipinos were our secretaries and computer techs and medical clerks in the clinic/hospital... and as I recall, we called them expats... just like us...

I have been trying to remember what we called the sweeper/cleaner types, but it wasn't TCNs.

I think TCN started as AramcoSpeak. It stands of courtse for "Third Country National". (IE neither Saudi nor American but....something else)

When in doubt consult that remarkable, and sometimes accurate source, Wikipedia

Looks like it started as military speak... not having ever been in such an organization, not familiar with it.

Dear VS,
