an announcement has been made during the first day of a 4 day break (after all faculty, students, staff have taken leave) that a new contract has been signed. It's great news, but there are no details.
The announcement contains no specifics about timelines of the contract etc., salaries/benefits, hiring (which was suspended recently, (and understandably because of the lack of a contract). Hopefully the terms and conditions of employment will not significantly change negatively as regards salaries paid and credentials required.
As a side note, Canadian hires were recently advised that they would have to pay a co-pay on their medical coverage as of tomorrow.
All contracts clearly and explicitly state that medical coverage is 100% covered and the current contracts for everyone are supposedly valid until July 31 2013. If this clause is subject to change, so too is the contract for each and every employee. Personally, 50QAR is not a burden. But it does open the contract for renegotiation from this point in time.
Once one term/condition is changed, the whole contract is open for renegotiation on an individual basis. At least according to Canadian law, which is the standard NL holds to.
It will be a relief to many families, but the lack of details, which hopefully will be filled in sooner rather than later. and it should be sooner in order to be able to operate at capacity. |
