Over a year ago I walked off my job at EF and left the country a few weeks after. I didn't get a release letter.

Is this going to present a problem if I try to get a job in a different province of China?

See:

"Warning! Henan Business College, Zhengzhou"

"There IS a blacklist!"

"NEVER thought this would happen....."

If you do a search on the first one, they'll all show up; I referenced it in all the topics.

What kind of transgression was it OP?
If all you did was get the owner's daughter pregnant it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
If on the other hand you were caught stealing chalk, which affects the bottom line, I don't like your chances.
Seriously OP, as you can't advocate for yourself, you should be as upfront with any prospective employer as they are the ones who will go into bat for you - even on dastardly chalk theft.
When I left my first job early (way back in '04), I found that my prospective new employer (a nationally ranking Tier One Uni) put pressure of an unknown kind on the old boss (Tier 4 Provincial Vocational College).
The letter was coughed up real fast.
That said, in '04 the black list was not fully operational.

No chalk theft or impregnation involved. I just got fed up with the organization and quit. First time in my life I'd walked off a job actually.

That's not serious, but the advice is the same - throw yourself on the mercy of your new employer and apply only to outfits (ie the State system) that outrank or perceive themselves as superior.
I don't think EF would strike terror into the FAO of any decent State employer.
Characterise EF as a mistake you made and that all along you really wanted a legit job serving the nation.

were you teaching legally?

if you dinna have a z-visa, and you dinna have an RP,
then you dinna have a job. you don't need to reference
the previous employer, and won't need a letter.

if you were teaching legally and you had the z-visa, but never
got the RP? i dunno............

Does EF recruit that way?
I know most/all of their outlets are franchises, but non-legal employment?

a release letter is only required for transferring to jobs in china.
going home and getting a new invitation letter will not require it.

I bow to your superior knowledge Gemini, but doesn't that undermine most of the benefit of the black list?
I thought its purpose was to weed out the molesters, drunks and all round bad *beep*.
If all you have to do is go home and reapply, then what's the point?
@OP I still think despite the new info that you should apply well away from the private market and be frank with the FAO who is looking to hire you.
The public system may be underpaid by your previous standards, but properly handled you can do privates without all that 'office' time and demo lessons etc and get your income up where it belongs.

I'm not looking to work for another language mill anyway, so it should probably work out just fine.

Thanks for the responses guys.

China is nationally able to block visas for people who commit crimes here, don't worry about that.
