In today's KT. Couldn't find the online version. So it turns out them rat bastard Japanese are to blame for Koreans walking on the left!
I look forward to the smooth transition. |

In my experience, there is no left/right option. Your options are:
- walk into trees, poles, overflowing garbage cans, bus stops, and vendors
- walk directly in front of stores with opened doors and people going in and out
- wade through the crowd in the middle
In the rare occasion of a clear path, zigzag seems to be the technique du jour. |

I remember wondering about this years ago. Why the hell do Koreans drive on the right but walk on the left (assuming there is order at all, haha)? I finally know. |

They do more or less. You'll notice most stairs for the subway indicate you walk on the left. When in doubt, always move to the left on the sidewalk.
My theory on walking in Seoul:

Yet at crosswalks, the arrows are on the right, and in public places, the escalator is often on the right-hand side. Basically, I laugh when people say Koreans walk on the left. But then I know I shouldn't do that because they do walk on the left, 50% of the time.
People here don't walk on a certain side, they just walk wherever they f-ing feel like it, which means usually down the middle. |

mindmetoo, your lack of respect for copyright right laws and the prestigious Korean media has forced me to report your blatant violation on the Seoul police snitch board.
Have a great time in jail. |

I think there is a slight tendency to veer to the left when approaching an oncoming pedestrian, but you're correct. It's usually a FFA, especially on busy subway staircases. |

But they tried that at COEX mall. They put "Entrance" and "Exit" signs at the front (near the open space near KFC and Jackie's Kitchen) and arrows pointing to go in the right door and go out the left door. They have changed it because it was complete chaos (and since it's normally quite chaotic everywhere in Korea, imagine it being worse!) |

The real problem arises when you, the globalized waygookin, 'know' the non-globalized Koreans walk on the left, but you miscalculate because you have come up head to head with a globalized Korean who knows you walk to the right and doesn't know you've become adapted to non-globalized Korean walking customs. |

Yeah. I've had that one too. I still like foreigner elevator etiquette. If you're in a full elevator and you're the closest to the hold button, you hold the door open for others, especially the women. You also let women on/off first. Non globalized have zero clue why you're not rushing for the door first. Are you going to inject them with an AIDS infected needle in their back? |

Yes, there are those who walk on the left and those who walk on the right; it's mixed. I notice that the walk on the left rule to understand people movement does not often work as some do veer to their right instead of left when approaching them. It very well could be changing from left to right. |

The current entrance/exit:
If you can get past the leggy woman in hot pants, you're right, it's back to the left. Of course in Korea in/out arrows are best ignored as the woman in pink demonstrates. And the woman in the striped top demonstrates sign mean nothing when there's an open door. Why take 5 extra steps or expend 3 calories pushing a door open to maintain social order? |
