Hi,
My name is Lonnie Edge and I am a recruiter. (Cue rotten tomatos, eggs and other foul things that may be thrown.) But wait! I'ts not what you think. I see many posts saying to find your own school directly and not to use the services of recruiters. I can understand this attitude. I myself was scammed by a recruiter when I first came to Korea. There are a lot of shifty ones out there. In fact my second contract here I found by dealing with a school directly.(After working as a recruiter for a year.) It is a good way to find a job if you know what you are doing. But what about the people who don't know what they are doing? I check black lists, visit schools when possible, make contact with current teachers at the schools or at least give their contact info to my prospective teachers, browse these boards for dirt on schools, and try to deal with the schools where I or my contacts have placed happy teachers in the past. People who don't check thoroughly can just as easily end up in a bad situation dealing directly with a school (Bad directors can lie just as well as a bad recruiter.) as they can dealing with a shady recruiter.
So my advice to people not wishing to use the services of a recruiter is to be thorough in checking out schools. I have provided links to every black list I know. Also these forums provided by Mr. Sperling are useful for digging up dirt. I hope this is helpful to prospective teachers. Of course if you want you could apply to me and I can check for you
For those of you who get my warning too late, I have provided a link to the Korean Ministry of Justice website. They have FAQ's, visa info, and an online form for reporting violations of Korean Labour Laws. Good luck.
Lonnie Edge
PS If anyone knows of a blacklist that I have not listed or another way to check into schools please notify me. Thanks

Mr. Edge is very correct up to this point. I'd like everyone to re-read the amount I quoted above, then add this sentence to it:
"Those people who don't know what they are doing should take their time and research, research, research by themselves BEFORE they take a job in Korea."
Never use a recruiter. |

I agree. There is nothing inherently wrong with using a recruiter so long as you are not foolish enough to think he just completed his seminary training. The recruiter merely hooks you up with a prospective employer, the rest is up to you. Check out the school thoroughly and, ultimately, make your own decision. I've met far too many recruiter bad-mouthers who were, in reality, just plain stupid. They trusted the guy implicitly, never did any of their own legwork and then were "shocked" to find they got screwed. Same thing could happen looking for work back home if you're a moron. |

If Han Can were so professional, they wouldn't have left my application with them hanging like they did.
Derrek: I'd agree, most recruiters are scum. But I've had the opportunity to come across a great recruiter for Canucks wanting to go to SK. He actually goes to the school (regardless of where in Korea it is) to check it out, rather than just relying on information from the school's director.
If any of you out there are interested, send me a private message and I'll give you the info about this recruiter.
There are indeed "diamonds in the coal mine", as someone said earlier on this forum.... |

Thanks. It's nice to have access to all the blacklists. |
