Choksan hotspring in Sokcho has segregated spas but also offers what they call "family rooms" for a flat fee, & I'd guess you could define family as loosely as you liked. Maybe other spas have similar.

Tiger beer

I heard Japan they are generally separated in most of the country..

I would generally (or specifically) agree Tiger. In the times I walked past any public baths they were seperated, and on the occasion I went to at least one which was very upscale and expensive (i.e. ski resort town rich kind), I never got the feeling like I was gonna get lucky and cop some looks. The Japanese seem too conscientious to allow such free sexual or cross-sex behavior. Also your "in the north I was told it's more relaxed" might make sense in that such coed behavior would only occur in a place which would be more like a Montana of the U.S. in that people are more seperated from the 'capital' cities, for lack of a better word, and don't feel like they are in the spotlight. But have hardly experience with Hokkaido myself...

Hmm.. I don't know? Whats a mogyoktang?

Basically a chimchilbang.. (well, I've only been once one time). Basically the bathing areas are separate - meaning you are naked with the dudes and the women you are with are naked with babes.

After you're finished bathing.. you put on your shorts and shirt (you store your other clothes in a locker).. but then you go to another area (upstairs in my one case).. and you can hangout with the girls of your party.. watch tv, get on the internet, go in and out of saunas, eat in the provided restaurant(s), etc.. however, once you've left the building, you can't come back in without paying again that I know of. You can also sleep in a chimchilbang.. there are mats all over the place.. or sleep on the floor.. or there is often a male bedroom and a female bedroom if you require a bed..

Yongsan back alleys:

The girls are very friendly.

Or gosh, did I actually EXPERIENCE this?

Gord knows.

We've all got better ways to spend our money, to be sure.

Anyway, Yongsan station by subway or aboveground, just across the street, it's all pink-lit, and there's a lot of mixed-sex socialising going on there. Especially in the late PM to early AM hours.

According to a bee in my ear . . .

"Mokyoktang" is bath JimJilBang is Sauna

Please note: Koreans often mix up the use of these words. When they say 'Sauna' they can mean either the baths or the sauna. And when you say 'Sauna' they will often think of the baths.....

It can be confusing. I seriously doubt there are any truly 'mixed' saunas in Korea where the men and women are nude. Come on, this is korea after all!

The one exception I could imagine is if you are looking to pay for sex....perhaps there are some massage parlors out there that have this kind of thing? I haven't the faintest.....just wondering.

I just finished watching a Korean video called I think "Moksutang". I bought it from a video shop that was selling all it's videos. The old ones were going for 6 for W1,000, and the newer ones were going for W1,000. The pornos were going for 5 for W10,000, and they sold out very quickly.
Anyway the movie has a photographs on the front and the back of people in a in a sauna. You have all probably seen it on the shelf somewhere.

It's an inside look of what goes on in a Sauna in both the men's side and the women's side, and it's very entertaining. You also get another humorous slant on Korean culture. All you sauna buffs will laugh your heads off.

A funny part in the movie is when some Russian woman with an excellent body walks in to the womans side strips and plonks her self into the shower. The Korean women all stop what they're doing and stare at her in wonderment. It's gets even more entertainig and I wont go into any more details, but it's well worth watching. I don't know if it's on DVD, but it's still worth watching if it's not.

Kyle,

You're on the right track. Some saunas do indeed offer "services". Usually advertised as a "massage". These "services" take place within the sauna confines (but not in the general bathing area). I've tried to simply bath at a few of these places, and was turned away. I guess you have to go the full monty, or it's nothing at all.

From my experience not exactly... Yes: Mokgyoktang is basically a bathouse. Inside you will find baths, showers and maybe saunas (like the ones we know. Damn hot; wet or dry). There may also be a sleeping room, slightly heated. In any case, everything is seperated (from my experience)

But Jimjilbang is not really a sauna. It's generally a very mildly heated room or rooms often taking up a whole building or several floors. Usually there are various temperatures and various surfaces on the floors (gold / silver etc). This is usually mixed, people doze, hang out, watch TV, eat, recover from hangovers etc. Sometimes this is used as a cheap substitute for a yogwan if the night has been a long one. Inside the Jimjilbang building, you can find a small bathroom area, where you have a wash before and after enjoying lazing around. These bathing areas are seperated; the rest is communal.

Guys. If you wanna see Korean snatch having a bath you're looking in the wrong place... Invite GF or score to take a shower with you Wink

Actually, besides jimjimbangs, the only real mixed saunas/hot springs where boy/girl can frolic together are "bubu-tangs" (bubu = married couple, but not exclusive to marriage). I went to one in Onyang a few years back.

Have used a sauna as a place to sleep. Cost me W3000. Probably could have done the same thing at a chimchilbang.

There's a place around Asan called Spavis that is a bit like that. The mixed area has a massage pool(the water does the massaging), some simple hot baths, and a swimming pool area. You can play all you want there, so long as you stay clothed. Once you wanna get clean, you drag yourself off to separate "real" sauna areas and get down to business. If you really want to be with your girl nekkid in a tub, though, they even have several private baths in little hut-like buildings.

Personally, I don't want to see nekkid chicks running around scrubbing their cooters, though.
