I was just on the telephone with a former student in Korea and I asked about the weather there. She told me it is 'big sky' season. I also remember people telling me that when I lived in Korea. I also remember Korean students in Vancouver telling me that Vancouver doesn't have a 'big sky' like Korea.
Have any of you heard this?
What the hell are these people talking about? |

I think they mean the rain and cloud has dissapeared. October: Invariably cool, bright and clear in korea. Great weather, in fact. |

But Why the term 'big sky'? What's big about it? Vancouver has clear, sunny days (rarely ) but these Koreans would say that Vancouver doesn't have a big sky like Korea.
Is it something lost in translation? |

I don't get it either.
It's not like Korea has big flat plains where the sky does look big. |

No clue.. but I'm rummaging my brain for all of the many drastically mispronounced words that come out sounding like different words when spoken through Korean-style English.. |

Someone already said it. its when right after the monsoon season there are few, high hanging clouds. thus "Big Sky" is not referring to the width, but rather the depth, or height as it were. |

It is not a Konglish term.
I take it you have never heard about A. B. "Bud" Guthrie, Jr.'s historical novel, The Big Sky? Some might recognize the quote,"standing under the big sky I feel free." Moreover, Missoula has a very popular and famous ESL/EFL program at the University of Montana, and many Koreans have been educated their over the years. I am not certain, but all of the above might be a factor in Korea's adoption of the expression "big sky."
Typically, when there are no clouds in the sky, like now, people use the term "big sky" to describe it. Why that is so confusing to some is beyond me and the big sky behind me! |

so.......... BIG SKY = Clear skies.
................."....."......= no Clouds.
................."....."......= The few clouds that are around are very high in the sky.
Got it.. I've heard Montana has a 'Big Sky' as well.. but I guess never really understood the meaning of those words before either..
I assumed 'Big Sky' had something to do with the flatlands part of montana and other Great Plains states (similar to Eamo's theory), where as far as you looked you could just see nothing but flat land and alot of blue sky far far into the distance of each very flat horizontal horizon..

My students usually say "The sky is high", which is also what Dan said. It means the sky is clear and seems to be 'high', as compared to low hanging clouds. When they tell me, I tell them the English expression is "The sky is clear". |

I've never heard of Big Sky (outside of Montana). I've heard many Koreans say the 'sky is high' in the fall. I've always understood it to mean the sky was clear, with no clouds.
It makes so much sense to me that I've started using it - or, maybe, I've lived here too long. |

"Big Sky" is also the result of low humidity. If you drive east to west in the United States, somewhere around the geographic middle the humidity gives way to very dry air, and suddenly the sky opens wide. I have had this experience a number of times. Moisture and particulate matter reflect light, and the result is a smaller feeling sky- too much refraction.
I am sure that a knowledgeable photographer could explain this phenomenon better than I- ditto an atmospheric scientist. |
