[Seoul Searcher]We can't have it both ways
I feel uneasy talking about baseball two weeks in a row, but I have to take the risk of boring some readers by taking up another incident involving a Korean baseball player, this time in the major leagues. Kim Byung-hyun, a relief pitcher of the Boston Red Sox, became engulfed in a controversy last week after he showed his middle finger to the fans at Fenway Park who booed him when he was introduced before a game against the Oakland A's.

Did you catch the newspaper with the huge yellow bold headline " F - You" (spelled out in all it's four letter glory) with a pic of BK waving his finger in the air?
What a loser. He is a choke artist. He deserved the boos. A real man would answer his critics by pitching a good game.....not by insulting the people that make him rich.... |

Not surprising considering he comes from a country were nobody has any idea how offensive it is to say this to someone out of jest. |

We can't have it both ways? Why not?
BK is someone who voluntarily move to another country to earn his living. He has all the duty to respect the people there and his childish behavior has every reason to be criticized. No doubt. But what the hell that case has to do with the majority of Koreans living in Korea feeling some malaise with the actual US-Korean relationship? Jumping right on what Koreans should do this and that without analyzing why they feel like say.. "anti-american" is just BS. |

What thread did you read before posting that? It clearly wasn't this one. No one hear mentioned anything about this phenomenon. |

you can have it both ways, but if you do you seem like an ungrateful little sh*t.
the conection the author makes is a little tenuious but he raises some good points. |

At the same time, Korean fans would have been just as forgiving of an American tossing them the finger in one of their major sports stadiums.
Nor would it have made the headlines. |

Hey smart one, did you not notice that they were all fined? Well besides Spears. How they were all ripped in the media? Its not like they "got away" with it or weren't criticized for it.
And unlike Kim, most of them did it in the heat of the moment, not some pregame introduction. Not justifying what they did, just pointing out the slight difference. |

Lee chun soo actually flipped off the crowd here during a soccer match, and he got a pretty severe penalty over that.... he was suspended for at least 4 games from what I can remember....it was a pretty big incident, and he lost major respect over it |

I believe Lee Chun Soo is Korean.
Might we assume the reaction would have been a little more intense had it been an American doing the same thing to a Korean sports crowd? |

But, in fact, it IS, in some contexts, a funny way that waygooks joke with each other. |
