Sticky... ah no... we have way too many. But I will add it to the Medical / Dental section in the FAQs (in the last post- scroll right) and promise to refer to it when it comes up. |

I know that in Cheong Ju, the best hospital for foreigners is the Choi Hospital near Chungbuk university's main gate. Have personally taught 3 docs from there, all at freetalking level. |

I had to go to Samsung Medical Clinic today and thought I would relate my experience for others. It's in Irwon-Dong, about a 5000won taxi ride from Coex.
I looked up the number on the website:
http://english.samsunghospital.com/
The number is 02 3410 3000 and I rang it, and spoke to a lady with pretty good English. She asked about what type of insurance I had, and when she found out it was Korean National Health Insurance, she told me that I had to talk to a different section (apparently the International Clinic is only for non-resident foreigners??). She also said to speak to Yu Jin Young, who has good English. So I rang it and said "Yu Jin Young please?", and got onto her easily.
She told me I HAD to have the last appointment of the day (something to do with being a foreigner (??), and that if I could, I should bring a korean speaking friend cos only the doc speaks English (!?!?) Hangon...? Isn't this an International Clinic?! (I didn't bring one and got by fine). She wanted to know if I wanted a regular doc or a specialist. The specialist has more experience than the regular doctor I think, rather than being a specialist in the field you want. As it was just a cough, I opted for the regular doc as the specialist is more expensive.
Anyway.
I went for my appointment (on the second floor of the annex building, there are signs in English to follow). I went to the international clinic, but it turned out I should have gone to the family clinic, which is where they don't speak English much. It was enough though. They took my blood pressure, and looked in my ear, as well and checking my height and weight.
Then I saw the doc, who's English wasn't brilliant, but was good enough to communicate what she needed to (her name was Kim Seon Young). She asked about my symptoms and their duration, and looked at my throat and listened to me breathe. She prescribed me some cough medicine, and told me to come back if the symptoms got worse or lasted another month (then it could be TB!).
I then had to talk to the ladies at the front of the family clinic, and they directed me downstairs to the Annex Building Cashier to pay. That lady spoke NO English, but I just gave her my insurance stuff, ARC and check card and signed for the bill, which was 16,220 won.
That's my story. It was pretty easy and even though I went to the wrong place, the lady spoke good English and took me in person to where I was supposed to be. I was relatively impressed with the doc cos she didn't automatically prescribe me 3 antibiotics and seemed to have sensible suggestions. If you're south of the river, it seems like a reasonable place to go. |

I go there as a non-resident foreigner for the last three years and love it. I have had nothing but the best care. |

I have had good experiences with Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital (순천향대병원), located in central Seoul (near Itaewon)
http://www.schmc.ac.kr/cheonan/eng/index.do
The international clinic is a small part of a big hospital but has very good doctors who speak excellent English andgive you time and very open communication. They also provide English-speaking assistants to guide you around the hospital if you have to take an x-ray, have a test done, check out at the cashier, etc. Very professional and comfortable environment.
When you enter the main building of the hospital just go up the stairs and make a left, go down the hallway. You will see signs (albeit small) in English indicating the International Clinic.
I didn't need an appointment when I went and it is also open with limited hours on Saturday. See the website for more information. |
