I'm due to finish my 1 year contract on november 24th. my pay day is november 15th. my school have told me my final month and severence will be paid into my home bank tthe following month on the 15th december. is this normal. my school have been sound to me but i've read loads of bad stuff about school ripping you off at the end. how normal is this situation and what should i do?

nope not normal at all.

Insist they pay you EVERYTHING you are owed before you leave.

The only thing some places might do is keep a housing deposit until all your bills are paid.

If your school won't budge, I'd talk to the Labor Board if I was you.

Sounds like they are either short on cash and making excuses, or they want to rip you off. I mean if you are in Canada/USA etc, what can you do to get your cash back?

There's also a law that went into effect a few years back that allows you extra time after your visa expires to fight for your severence pay. Ask immigration about it.

Mr Pink is right. Severance is due at the completion of the contract.

I seem to remember something about schools having 14 days to pay money due to former employees.

But I need to take a shower before my water gets turned off so I'll try and find the link somewhere.

I was always under the impression that it was due at the end of your contract, as at that time, you work shouldn't have any more obligations towards you, however, that 14 day or 2 week period makes sense.

The amount of time before you have to leave the country legally should be when they have to pay you. It seems to me that by the time they are no longer legally responsible for you is the time you should have the money.

The 14 day grace period concerns both paycheck and severance.
