I'm thinking, there are several departments in which native English speakers teach English at Hankuk University of Foriegn Studies.
And each of these deparments offer a different salary, housing benefits, contact hours per week and vacation time.
Which department are you looking at.
I know those working in the English Education Dept. are making over 4 million won a month, with overtime.
Still, it's a school to avoid for a number of reasons - caps on contract renewals, forced summer / winter camps, late Friday and Saturday classes, etc.
A bum uni job.
Which department your interested in? |

There is a way to have Google search this site for you. Just enter this:
"Hankuk University Of Foreign Studies" site:http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/
into Google and it will search this site for "Hankuk University Of Foreign Studies"
You might want to try doing a Google search with "HUFS" also.
Cheers. |

Such a shame.
It seems like HUFS would be a great place for serious teachers who really want to teach real English... |

Don't even consider it. Based on the information you provided, it is the Foreign Language Institute. HUGE TURNOVER! Look at Dave's job postings. The co-ordinator is a certifiable crackpot. |

I have a good friend at the institute there.
Director: crackpot, but avoidable (usually)
Conditions: big step up from a hagwon, not as good as many uni postings on here though (in other words, if you have a masters search elsewhere)
Better than a public school: a qualified maybe (depends on where you are)
Housing: Decent sized apartment/two rooms on campus.
Neighborhood: ugly, but near costco and not far to downtown Seoul |

Correction makemischief:
Director: Useless. Doesn't want to deal with foreigners (as indicated by his Korean colleagues). Refers you back to the co-ordinator.
Co-ordinator: Certifiable crackpot. Unavoidable? Perhaps, if you continuously kiss her as** daily (as many instructors disgustingly do there).
Conditions: Better than a hogwan? Perhaps if you are working 50 hours plus weekly, with ADD kids with Tourettes Syndrome in some extremely rural area for under 2 mil. HUFS: 20 hours plus including substantial prep time and ridiculos split shifts. Not to mention, get low evals, and you are out mid contract! (Just look every 3 months on Daves for postings)
Better than a Public School: Maybe the holidays, but many previous instructors I know from there are MUCH MUCH happier at their respective public schools.
Housing: University is making money off the instructors by charging additional fees up to 200,000won plus monthly for accomodation. Not to mention the security who are paid to spy and report back to adminstratiion. (Housing is ON CAMPUS).
Neighborhood: Dump. Good sushi restaurant and cheap food though. Extremely loud with little privacy. Who wants to see their students on their days off anyways? Costco is not THAT close. Geez . . . .
Anyways, hopefully this will clarify the bombardment of PMS I have received over the years. Seriously consider public school gigs over this one. Nuff said . . |

hmmm.
save for confusing director and co-director this is pretty much what i said, albeit with more emphatic adjectives.
i sure as hell don't think i come across as endorsing the place. egads.
i suppose others there have more dreary middling, but perhaps less entirely gob-stoppingly dreadful, impressions
anyways, as noted- if you've a masters- look elsewhere.
if not, and you want to be in seoul at a *cough* "uni" (if for longer vacations only) and don't have connections- your choices are but a handful- and HUFS is one of those fingers- perhaps the middle one? |

If anyone happens to take a job at the HUFS Mohyeon, Yongin campus then give me a shout - I'm in Mohyeon-Myeon and I've seen about 2 foreigners in my area since I got here including visits up the the HUFS canteen for cheap Don-Cassu |

HUFS has several uses for English speakers.
College of English
Department of English Education
Grad School of Education
Institute |
And....Department of English Interpretation and Translation.
I've interviewed for a few positions in different departments at this school and pretty much walked out of the interviews.
The schedules are HORRIBLE!
Also, 4 months vacation is reduced to 2 months because of the compulsory summwer and winter classes.
Foreign profs don't even get their own office space like the local teachers - they are put into a single room where they can prepare.
Housing for this school is sketchy also. |
