One interesting thing I noticed about the anti-canal website is that, 90% are opposed, they still allow pro-canal postings too. The heading of each forum thread or comment includes the Korean words for "Support" and "Opposition".

Despite all of LMB's talking up of tourism opportunities with the canals, it's going to spell the end of activities like this.

This is part of Nakdong river.

In Canada we did the same thing, although replace Roh with Paul Martin and Uri with Liberals.

To say this canal plan doesn't make sense is the understatement of the year, if not the century.

To say this canal plan is behind the times, is also an understatement. Inland canals made economic sense about 200 years ago, when the Erie Canal was built. It produced an economic miracle for New York State. This miracle lasted for about 50 years, until the railroad took over freight hauling. But even 200 years ago, a canal diagonally across Korea never would have made sense -- it's surrounded by water!

What's next? A bridge to Japan?

Is the new head honcho of Korea out of his mind? Can't be, because Koreans elected him overwhelmingly, with the canal as part of his platform. So he must be perfectly normal, as defined by the majority of Koreans. Right?

Or could everyone here be insane? What could cause such mass delusion?

The answer is obvious: kimchi.

Nearly everyone in Korea eats it morning, noon and night. Kimchi is never out of their systems long enough for them to return to reality. If they did, their heads might explode.

I think it's time this syndrome had a name. Suggestions, anyone?

I was thinking "Mad kimchi disease."

Or perhaps "Kimchi madness."

For more evidence of kimchi madness, see Exhibit B:

I'd like to encourage some sort of under the radar campaign in Korea for foreigners. How about buttons that say "Say no to the canal" in Korean?

I registered for the website with a little help from the wife. I'm going to see if I can post something on it.

I know a few people that live in Sangju and Munkyoung. That area is the southern end of the 40km canal that will link the nakdong and han rivers. Suprisingly all of them were in support of this possible project.

To them, some construction/econmic activity is better than nothing. Since these areas are losing more and more of their youth to the cities every year. I think people who live along this proposed canal, and the areas along the rivers, that will be used as the route to transport goods, are overwhelming in support of this project. I wonder what percent of Koreans actually support and oppose this project. Since polls can be easily tailored to make it look like people support the question asked.

We're doing the same in UK, except replace Roh with Brown and Uri with Labour.

Two party politics is a fraud and an insult to democracy.

I have recieved a nice response on the website. They have asked me how many foreign teachers would be willing to wear pins in opposition to the canal.

If you are willing to wear a pin, please let me know. I'll see if I can coordinate something.

I kid you not when I say that in NZ we will be doing the same in 2008,
except repalce Roh with Helen Clark and Uri with Labour.

In fact Natioanl are what, 55% in the polls, which means they wouldn’t even need to form a coalition to govern. While I’m tired of Labour, the thought of National doing what it wants is scary.

I would certainly wear a pin, so long as it's small.

"Well, 50 is the minimum, okay. It's up to you if you want to do the bare minimum, or uh, well, Brian for example has 137 pieces of flare, and a terrific smile."

I've seen a range of bumper stickers, posters and other things on www.gobada.co.kr

I like the one which says "The Grand Canal is the Road of National Ruin".

I'll try to find some better links this time as the last pictures I posted were huge.

The good news is that the United New Democratic Party is going to make opposing the canal a major policy tenet in upcoming national elections.

KD,

That is good news, although they got their *** beaten in the last couple of elections (Uri is pretty much the same party as UNDP). They'd better get their act together, or the GNP is going to be pretty much in control of both the presidency and the National Assembly.

I also downloaded one of their banners and will be adding it to my sig line on Dave's.
