You may have seen the Ssomi and Hobo cartoon strip, by Artier Lee, in the Korea Herald. What's your impression of the cartoon?
Please add a comment too, as the poll options are a bit limited. Maybe there are some readers out there who find the cartoonist's esoteric comments to be profound and enlightening.
Personally, I'd be happy to see a Korean cartoon from the vernacular newspapers. The Herald could provide a translation underneath. Korean cartoons provide excellent social commentary and would be more relevant to our lives in Korea. |

I feel that the cartoon in question has been horribly translated, it just doesn't really make sense. I've show the Korean version of the cartoon to Korean co-workers and they just say it's so so. So so is ten times better than the English version.
The translator seems to have really missed the art of translating the actual context rather than just the words.......IMO. |

I think the cartoon is written in English. I've seen the Korean translations in the English Daily supplement of the Korea Herald though.
The kind of cartoons I'd like to see would be like this:
비자금 = slush fund
김용철 변호사 = Kim Yong Chul, Lawyer |

Your idea for cartoons is great, but I think it's a little too political for what the Korean Herald is about. They don't seem to like getting into political stories that criticise the Korean governmant that much.
As of the Ssomi and Hobo being written in English first, who they hell are they paying to do that!!!!!   |

You're probably right. I think showing cartoons from Korean papers offers another window for viewing Korea, but the English language media here tends to be a wee bit too mild.
I'm not 100% sure about Artier Lee writing the cartoons in English, but I think it's the case. There was an interview with him when the cartoon first came out but I can't find it on the web now. Maybe the KH reporter who sometimes pops up on this forum can verify things for us. |

| I'd always assumed it was a Korean strip translated into English. It has that irritating faux-philosophical style shared by many Korean comics. |

Ssomi and Hobo reminds me of Love Is.
And coming from me, that's not really meant as a compliment.
The English is pretty bad, though you can usually understand what the moral of the story is. Artier Lee needs to hire someone who can correct his awkward phrases.
Artistically, it's okay. Ssomi's kind of cute. But Lee should have more variations on how he renders the illustrations. It seems that he'll go a whole month drawing Ssomi wearing one kind of outfit, then have her change clothes for another month.
But the main problem is the lousy English. |

I think his English is fine. It's just his "jokes" are crap, and if he's trying to come from a philosophical angle rather than a humour angle, it's just a bit trite and silly.
