Viewing of Koyaanisqatsi May 18th 8pm
"1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by minimalist composer Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.
The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living', and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way."
Beautiful movie, bring a buddy and some beer and hang out at Yogiga for a night.

I remember seeing Koyaniskaatsi when it came out in 1982...my old man took me and the brother to it on the big screen. I remember it well. Heavy stuff. |

Absolutely! Awesome film. Nothing is in real time, everything is either sped up or slowed down, and the impact is powerful.
I remember seeing this at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic play the Philip Glass score live. Amazing! I still can't get how the orchestra could get the split-second timing down so perfectly in sync with the film. Incredible! |

Live soundtrack, huh? Cool. Did they get a shaman in there to chant 'koyaaniskatsi,' too? I remember that from the beginning part, I think, with the timelapse cloudscapes. |

Koyaanisquatsi is mind-blowing. I'll be up for that.
If you like Koyaanisquatsi then you will also like Baraka. A bit darker but the same kind of thing.

Same cinematographer, isn't it? I thought Baraka was a by-product of the '--skatsi' trilogy.
I'll just imdb that to be sure...
Oh, ok. It's the same cinematographer as koyanistakssktike but not the other two. |

Darker, Eamo? I bet the third one in the series, 'Naqoyqatsi: Life as war' would be pretty effing heavy. I've not watched it, deliberately. I'd probably cry and be sad. |

Haven't seen Naqoyqatsi. Interesting. I'll D/L it.
I thought Baraka had a different feel from the -qatsi films. more pessimistic. |
