Housing: University is making money off the instructors by charging additional fees up to 200,000won plus monthly for accomodation. Not to mention the security who are paid to spy and report back to adminstratiion. (Housing is ON CAMPUS).

a quick note- for the institute at least the housing is not charged . comes with free TV and internet. just to clarify.

Granted, the housing is not directly charged, however, you are forced to live directly on campus and pay "maintenance fees" totalling up to 200,000won per month. Of course this can be convienent due to your lousy spilt shifts (few hours scattered here and there throughout the day, followed by sporadic evening hours),

The security guards are paid to "spy" on the foreigner staff. I know because I was close friends with one of the adminstrators who told me about the various reports. For example, the rumour mill was churning (in administration) that I had "porn" on my coffee table. When is Maxim considered porn? How did they even know I had Maxim? The security guards regularly enter your apartment to look around and yes, STEAL your belongings. I have numerous individuals who can attest to this. I had everything stolen from expensive designer clothing (scarfs, jeans, sweaters) to sundries, to furniture (bookcase). I changed my locks more than once (which of course of "not permitted").

The security guard would also tell my Korean girlfriend at the time, that foreigners were "dirty" and that she was a "sl*t" for dating foreigners. Of course, when I complained to adminstration, nothing happened.

After surviving in the most hostile working environment for a few years, you may have the option of getting off campus housing, which is usually reserved for families or those who regularly kiss the co-ordinators bum.

Now depending on your standards and luck, you may receive an apartment that has heat, gas, water, stained wallpaper, cockroaches, horrid, rank smells, excessive street noise (or festival noise), paper thin walls (so you can always hear your colleagues business), and clausterphobic interior (shoebox).

If you have no other options, and have to accept this position, get housing off campus with a small deposit and pay 300,000won+ monthly. PM me and I will recommend some places for you. Although, if you enjoy your students seeing you every day and gossiping about what you do on your day off go for it!

I'd like to confirm the info in this thread.

Avoid the HUFS FLTTC job at all costs.

HUFS English Department is advertising 10 available professor positions (with even lower salary). Either a) they received some form of grant and are hiring more instructors or b) everyone quit or got fired. Would be curious to know what happened . . .

Actual professor's positions, or "professor"'s positions?

I'll go with (b)... mass departmental cleansing.

They must have pulled something on the teachers there, and they left/are leaving. That'd be my guess. I know a guy working there who was quite happy, and one of our Korean profs heard through a Korean friend that HUFS liked him, too. Now I hear that he is leaving due to the politics.

All I know for sure is that I have lost interest in even applying for the place. Far too much bad press to bother. I'm staying put for another year.

I interviewed with them twice in two different departments.

Avoid it. I got a very bad feeling about the place from talking to the different chairs and teachers in my interviews. 2 - 4 year term limits on contracts (sometimes not enforced) and no one knew where they stood. Some of the teachers I talked to while visiting for my interview were in their 3rd or 4th year and had no idea if they'd be renewed or not.

Terrible hours that also required late Fridays until 10:00pm, Saturday classes and forced summer and winter teaching.

Not a good school to work for in my opinion.

Why? Are you afraid of getting fired for posting them?

ive quit, so it matters not to me. heres my rundown of the FLTTC.

broke my contract, was sick of the absolute shit. the coordinator is beyond unprofessional. she blatantly favours the sycophantic staff members, and flat out ignores the others. wether you are in favour or out of favour can change at the drop of a hat, for reasons unknown to everyone and anyone.

4 teachers left this time around. each semester about 4 teachers quit, and a handful more are fired.

this time around no one, shockingly, got the boot. but i know they hired teachers they didnt want, becuase SURPRISE, anyone with half a brain or qualifications turned down the job. even the pay raise they implemented isnt going to help them land the teachers they need.

it is indeed split shift. expect days akin to 930-1130, 230-330, then 740-930 in your first semester. if you dont get SACKED before your second semester (with 24 hours notice) then things mgiht get marginally better. again, this is if you are in favour. if you are out of favour, it doesnt matter how long youve been there, cause youll get shit schedules anyways.

this being said, there are some really really great teachers here. teachers who are far better than this position. they work so hard, it is my hope they will come to, and move on to bigger and better things. positions worthy of their talent, and ones where they will be recognized for their hardwork, not belittled as it is now.

i did 2 years in a hogwan, and i was happier there than i ever was here. the only plus here is the vacation, 3 months. but god damn, you need that time to get your head back in shape after the brutality of the semester.

student evaluations less than 80% get you sacked. mind you, no one tells the students this, and they think that teachers only get sacked if they get like 10-20% on their evals.

this place is evil. a hellmouth. if you are keen on joining up with the evil league of evil, give it a go...

oh the horror. thank god i left. i can feel the joy slowly creeping back into me.

ah yes, a few other things.

housing is ok. gotta fight for things like fridges that work. you get a bed and fridge, thats it. you need to buy anything else. living on campus is brutal due to NOISE. its always noisy, drunk ppl all the time. in the spring and summer they have on campus fundraising and dept parties. they go all night. in the evenings there are drumming circles that practice directly outside the building for HOURS on end, mon-fri. they are there from 4 or 5 till 10-11. EVERYNIGHT. it sounds like they are IN your apt. enough to drive one insane. sometimes they are there on sat too. apts are not soundproof.

the cleaning ladies are nuts. dont get them, and definately change your locks. they have master keys to all the apts, and seem to think they can come and go as they please.

theres new security guards tho, they are fabulous and kind. i really like them.

I'd say it's not just the English programs there that underpay. I turned down a job in another department based on the low salary and above average number of contact hours, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made professionally.

The people in the department were fantastic, but their hands were tied by the administration where salaries were concerned. Too bad, as I probably would have enjoyed working with the students there and teaming up on some research with a couple of the other profs.

Tyno:

HAHAHAHA kindred spirit. You encapsulated HUFS exactly. Although, you got lucky because our housing security guards were racist and xeonophobic. One told my ex-girlfiend she was a sl*t for dating foreigners, and locked the apartment building entrance door after 11:00pm. Looking back, working and living there makes for a great story of worst experiences in Korea. . . So glad its all over.
