Maybe this is common practice at other Jim-ji-bangs, but I'm a little pissed that the new one in Itaewon, of all places, refuses foriegners entry without a Korean escort/friend.
I wonder what they would have said if it were a female Korean I came in with?
The guy at the counter confronted me in front of about 5 koreans standing around in the lobby. He told me that it is "a Korean sauna", and asked me to return with a Korean friend.
I told, "Wow -- that's discriminatory...and the Korean government asked me to open a branch of my semiconductor company in Seoul. Now I have another reason to tell them why I say, 'no'".
With that, I walked out.
By the way it's located on hooker hill behind Hilltop hotel. I think it's called, "Itaewon land."
They have been hiring advertising and stuff to promote it from the street.

I went to a Noraebang in Itaewon on Sunday with a couple of Koreans and a Japanese/American. They wouldn't let the Koreans in. Since I was standing near the back of the group I don't know whether they had a problem with me. Japanese only was what the half Japanese guy told me. He was more angry about it than any of the rest of us. We went to the one downstairs. No problem. |

I got turned away from a restaurant for being American... I went next door and dropped like 40,000 by myself just because I friggin' felt like it at that point. |

The only place I've ever been turned away from for being a foreigner was also in Itaewon. The sauna next to the Hamilton Hotel.
They were as polite about it as they could possibly be about turning away a paying customer for the color of his skin. |

By the way, I'm currently sitting in the sauna/jimjibang UNDER Hamilton Hotel.
Came here instead.
Is it the same one you got turned away from? They were very nice to me. |

It's like something out of Pretty Woman. Get rejected for some superficial ridiculousness, then just splash out elsewhere just to show them where they went wrong.. :D
At the NB nightclub @ Hongdae, I was asked for ID. Surprised, I presented my passport, upon which the bouncer asked for 20 000, whereas everyone else paid 10 000.
What's the deal?
Foreign guys need to pay 20K.
What about foreign girls? (We had one in our group)
Nope, just foreign guys.
At this point, the group were seriously considering doing something else, but I HATE being the party pooper so I coughed up the cash. Doesn't matter if you're a gyopo, or whatever. Foreigner = more dough.
It's as if they expected me to walk out with half the friggin girls in the club (which I would not have minded one bit) .. :)

psychedelic,
Report them???...
Get off da drugs mate....most establishements have the right to refuse service to anyone they want.
Its not right, its not cool, its even dumb but hey it happens.
Just go somewhere else (bar I mean).
These incidents seem isolated. Me and my friends have never been refused service anywhere here. But thats just our experience.
Also, not to justify the refusal, but perhaps the owner had problems with foreigners coming to his bar in the past (fights and such). |

there are several places in itaewon that are korean only or foreigner only or at least used to be that way.
if i remember correctly, the limelight used to be a korean-only night club and the nashville used to be western-only (except for some korean staff).
it's kind of sad really, but if both cultures are doing it i guess there is nothing you can do. |

It still is. A Korean male is not permitted to enter the Nashville on his own. He will be turned away at the door. There is a sign as you enter that says no Koreans allowed.
BTW, I got turned away at the International Bar once in Pohang because it was restricted. International Bar?! What a joke!

Homer, do you think refusing entry to foreigners is racist, regardless of how it is justified |

During the anti-American hysteria last year there were several restaurants which refused service to Americans. The government rightly put up a big stink about it as it was not the most attractive thing for potential investors. |

Indeed I do Matko. But its more complicated then that my man....
Its just or as or even more racist to refuse entry to Koreans in bars that are in their own country.
But it still happens....
My point: there are plenty of Bars out there and in the end the owner of the establishment can do what he wants since it is his place.
He may hurt his business by doing so but its still his choice.
Were I to be refused entry or service in a bar or restaurant here I would move on to another place. The loss is theirs (losing a customer) not mine. |

Are you reffering to KTSA clubs in Itaewon? The primary reason that Koreans are not allowed in KTSA clubs is that the alcohol is excise tax-free. It is also true that many of the clubs on the "hill" don't want Korean males and foreigners getting plastered and mixing it up.
Personally, I think most of the clubs in Itaewon and most everywhere else are depressing. I'd just assume go to a nice quiet hof myself. |
