These are one of the best things I have discovered in Korea. Either use a Korean credit card or:
Go to one of those newspaper stands that has a sign in Korean which says: Gyo-tong cardu. Pay 12,000 for the card. You get 10,000 work of credit, but you save 8% on every ride. Recharge the card at the same place, a bank or at a subway station. You cannot buy the card at a subway station (of course!), but you may be able to buy one at a bank.
If anyone lives near Kangnam Station, PM me and I'll help you buy one. |

The card can be obtained at a bank, but ONLY Woori Bank
You can get them at 7-11 as well |

| I remember havinga hard time finding one too. Why don't they just sell them in the subway station? You can recharge them at the ticket offices,but you can't buy them there...doh! |

They also work (and provide the discount) on buses. |

Yes, that is one of the points of having the card and paying the extra 2,000 won for it.
but I don't have to use one anymore, as I have a credit card |

| if you take the itaewon market exit and head down the main drag the first of those newspaper stands sells them. Say carduh juseyo and you get one. |

I just thought it was for the convenience. Whip out the wallet, and tap. No paper card to keep track of, and stick in the machine. That, to me, is worth a litle extra. |

Ya, really old post. The card they are talking about doesn't exist anymore. T-money replaced it.  And it is better because you can use it at some stores and vending machines, etc. |
