I could tell you the horrors of living in rural Korea, but I think this
guy, Cohiba, summed it up eloquently and logically here. Knew what
he was doing that dude.
Remember "Cohiba's Rule" (Now better than ever!):
Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell Cuban cigars, European pies, cold
cuts or rye breads. Just to name a few things. Also clubs such
as photography, drama, public speaking, sailing are 99% in
the capital city. If you want to experiment with a very Korean
culture, which unfortunately means "closed", then choose the
countryside. If you want to make money and have the lifestyle
choices similar to a western country, then there is no other
choice than Seoul.
The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.
If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.
This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.
I, unfortunately, live near Seoul where the FFF factor
is almost in the negative range. I know! |

i live there for just short of two years a ways back. it is more developed now and has a lot more people and western amenities that some people cant seem to live without. maybe that works for you.
when i was there, there were a lot of empty lots and i could literally walk to "the edge of the city (Daegu)" and that was really cool.
that said, the air is much better, the muggles are tighter, a ride downtown will cost you a cool 10k or a 45 minute bus ride. i walked home drunk sometimes in the summer (a good way to get sober), that took three and a half hours.
its great for hiking and mountain biking.
i miss it in a lot of ways and would trade it for Seoul in a flash if i could make as much money without going into my own business.
oh, and Daegu has the prettiest girls in Korea
There you have it...chilgok highlights...
Seeing the edge of the city  and walking home for three and a half hours after getting pissed

| i used to know a few people from chilgok when i lived in Daegu. They were always complaining how it was far from the rest of daegu and not on any subway lines. |

Chilgok is NOT part of Daegu. It's about a $15-20 cab ride from Daegu to Chilgok. Don't bother.
Just get a job in Daegu. (and if your boss barely speaks any English, how are you going to talk to him about any future problems you may have?)
1. Get a job in Daegu
2. Find a boss who can speak English decently |

| actually chilgok is part of daegu, technically. Daegu sucks pretty bad anyways so why live a 20 min cab ride from there anyway? get a job somewhere else my friend |

Daegu doesnt suck, nice place to work.
Chilguk,is boring and too far away from the fun stuff. I lived there for a bit but it was lonely. I did get treated really well at work but I was the token white guy so I was put in a corner. I would have loved it but when I got done work I didnt feel like sitting on a 45 minute bus to get downtown. Think about it, 45 on a bus is too far for downtown to be your stomping grounds. |

Stay out of chilgok. Really, its not worth living here.
Only if you are a married guy and want to stay out of trouble then move to chilgok.
Anything else, just dont go. Its nothin by ajummas, ajoshis, and and a bunch of annoying middle school kids.
Trust me, dont come here. have a nice day.
Everybody who lives in chilgok says "well, its not that bad". Thats not the best way to describe a town you live in. |

Chilgok is not part of Daegu, it's a separately administered district called Chilgok County. However, certain parts of Chilgok are essentially a suburb of Daegu and from and outsider's point of view looks like it's part of Daegu and has extensive bus service into Daegu. |
