Market Leader is a HORRIBLE book (before you jump down my throat, I have a BBA and an MBA, plus I do consultancy work and teach business, not biz English) when someone showed it to me.

What specifically is horrible about it? Teaching business and teaching Business English are two completely different things. |
Yes, and I taught business English at YBM eons ago when they needed a teacher with business experience. It is their standard book, but I substituted it with something else.
What is horrible about it? It lacks substance. It lacks direction. The order of the topics is rather random. It relies a lot on people with real experience, which really isn't much use if you are an undergrad student, or someone who has very little business experience. It relies on you knowing a lot of industry jargon.
That just about sums it up for me. |

Or you could teach them the industry jargon, that sounds pretty useful to me. |

So by that rationale it's a great book for people with "real experience" (pre-experienced learners).
I agree that it's not a good book for university students. However, for businesspeople, I have yet to find a better one. |

| It is a good book for people with WESTERN business experience. Not so much Korean - not unless your students really want to learn all about American business culture and etiquette. |

That's funny, considering it's a British Book and focuses on British English. |

That's not strictly true. Like I've said, I've looked at it, there is a lot of Americanism in it. The book itself is marketed to bring *international business* into the classroom*. |

It's not strictly true that it's a British text written in British English? Now I'm confused.
As an American, I have to disagree that there is an American slant to it. It does focus on English in the international business context though. Maybe you've noticed that many of the speakers in the listening exercises aren't even native speakers. You've got accents from every corner of the globe (and an American or two for good measure).
Additionally, the case studies focus on multinational (albeit primarily European-based) companies.
If you can recommend a better multi-skills book for pre-experienced learners, I'm all ears. |

I like Business Opportunites by Vicki Hollett. Used it before, not so presumptious and gives a lot more directions to students.
p.s. may be because I am British I am acutely aware of the fact that they have a few Americanisms in it?
When I say it's not strictly true, I mean it isn't JUST British.
But you are right, it is international and has a variety of World Englishes.
I still don't like it.
Sorry. |

That seems like the reason for taking the class, to gain some exposure to Western business ways.
Students do want to learn about that (mine anyway). |

What do you mean by "presumptuous?" As for directions, one shouldn't be at the mercy of the book. I'm always on the lookout for better materials, which is why I'm curious why some people are against ML. |

"easy to low intermediate" Business English?
Someone please author a book entitled "You have no business thinking there is business English at your level".
ESP at low levels is called English class. |
