I'm just wondering. Don't most doctors recommend a half to a whole Asprin a day for guys who are over 40, in order to help prevent strokes? I, myself take half in the morn and half in the eve. Now listen, I'm not recommending anything to anybody here. Just asking a question. Wink

One thing I really wonder about is how prepared are these psychologists to take into account culture when making diagnoses. For example, suppose an Indian wanted to see a psychologist and the psychologist was from the West. Might there be cultural factors at play, that might obscure what is going on?

Good question. Inter-cultural issues are a reality in an international context. It's the responsibility of the therapist to educate himself/herself about these issues. Many schools offer these kinds of courses as a part of their program. I guess that sensitivity is the key.

I am moving to Bundang in two weeks and am a registered psychologist from Australia. I have mostly worked with addiction and young adults (25-45) with mental health issues. I have facilitated a men's group for the past four years. My strengths in therapy are around supporting people who feel "stuck" in depression or suffer from debilitating anxiety. I am taking a break from full time therapy in Australia as I have young children and would like them to experience living in Korea before they reach school age as my wife and I lived here for a couple of years before having children. I am definitely open to supporting anyone in the bundang area that may identify in themselves a need for support.

Here's something I found out when researching services for foreign spouses in Korea (I serve on a committee on muliticulturalism and had to give a lecture on the topic)....

Among other perks such as reduced gym membership fees at local public community centers, foreign spouses receive FREE phsychological counseling services from participating hospitals (don't know where you'd find a list of them, but if you have a Korean spouse they should be able to find out easy enough).

From what I could find out, this includes counseling from certified medical professionals - yup, M.D.s (bilingual? Don't know...) AND free meds if prescribed!

DEFINITELY worth looking into if you're on an F2/F5.

Definately worth being wary of. Korean shrinks are very quick to prescribe meds.

I'd reccomend starting with a foriegn concellor or if you need meds - a shink at one of the international clinics.

As an above poster said - culture is important when it comes to these matters.

You do make a point. Still, from what people have stated on the boards, a lot of the 'real psychologists' are script happy in Korea. So for whatever it's worth, there can't be a problem researching and potentially using qualified and free assistance if it's a viable option. Just a thought.

Plus, if they are dealing with non-Korean spouses, odds are they speak English or are in the position to hook people up with English speaking professionals.

These days, I personally no longer take aspirin. Instead, I take vitamin E. IMHO asprin is good for rubbing onto mosquitoe bites to help rid one of itching. Smile

Assuming that there is a stigma attached to psych meds, how do you make sure it's confidential? Have any of you had any experiences with the use of medication with respect to your employer?
