I was browsing the internet and I came across this story. Wow I have never came across anything like this. Seems pretty sick.

The photos were of a "graduation wrap-up party" in a middle school in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province.
According to the victims, they received short messages from the seniors before the ceremony, telling them to join the naked celebration and warned of serious consequences if they refused to come.
S Korean President Lee Myung-bak called the problem a "cultural issue" and a " serious illness" in society, promising to reside over a monthly meeting on changing the public education system |

When the story first broke of students being forced to strip naked for photos that were posted on the net, LMB's first public statement was that 'Korean students just need to work off stress and this shouldn't be a police matter".
So, here you have a president speaking of illegal acts as a 'social illness' and then saying well, it's just stress, let's not get them in trouble.

I saw it on TV. The misses said this kind of thing has been going on for a long time.
I don't know how making young boys get naked makes you cool. If anything it makes you gay or a future pedo? |

I'll gamble and say two out of the three.
Anyway, I taught in a Korean high school about 6 years ago, so no surprises here. Some of the more aggressive boys would have a veritable free-for-all on their cohorts between classes. |

Not just boys. It was girls too. Judging from what I've seen, it looks like there was a big group of perpetrators. Around 15-20 students, both male and female. The big group of older students were "hazing" the younger ones.
A graduation "hazing" ritual still happens in rural areas. The only reason this one was reported was because someone uploaded pictures on the internet. I think the usual hazing is tearing off someone uniform and throwing flour on them. This group of students from Ilsan took it to a while new level. |

I think its probably comparable to certain initiation rites that happen in the west at times ...e.g. during graduation or induction to the army.
Thats not to excuse it though. Group bullying and coercion into something seriouly infringing the dignity of individuals is sick. |

LMB is right. Nudity, as anyone who has ever visited a jimjilbang will know, is just not a big deal in Korea.
Of course, forcing people to do it is wrong, but this is not way beyond the pale of ordinary hazing. It is only an issue because of the pictures. |

I have visited plenty of Jjimjilbangs, so I can't understand the point you're trying to make here.
Even in hazings, and believe me, I've been through enough. No one ever FORCED me to strip in public with the threat of violence, or sexually assaulted me, and then uploaded my nakedness to the internet.
Last I heard, those things are all illegal. Bullying is a police matter here, and is highly publicized as such. I'm willing to bet creating pornography, especially under the age of 18 is not exactly legal either. Privacy LAWS are quite strict.
Somehow though, this is not a legal matter?
This reminds me of that middle school, gang-rape/sodomy case here in Daegu a year or two ago. The whole nasty, horrible situation was swept under the rug. Apparently it wasn't a police matter either. |
