The Royal Anchor is really a great bar. Benchwarmers is where most of the foreigners hang out, but you always come out of there smelling like grease and cigarette smoke. It's tremendously dirty.

Hey boatofcar. Thanks for the tip on The Royal Anchor. I just moved 30 minutes north of Ulsan and in my 3rd week I'm already pretty bored. Any other suggestions??

I saw an old post mentioning Be-Bop Jazz (complete with live Jazz music) in Samsandong, but haven't found anything on the net. Are there any jazz bars in Ulsan?

To meet people you are prob best heading to benchwarmers first, the anchor is cool but very hit and miss if there will be people in there.

Benchwarmers is a great place to go and meet others. I spent many a night there and if they are still doing it, Pub Quiz night is very popular.

Every Sunday there was a homecooked meal too! My wife and I served fajitas the weekend before we left.

I miss it quite a bit!

From the posts here it seems like there is a decent ex-pat community in Ulsan. Would those who have lived there/still live there recommend it?

Ulsan is one of the cities i had for list of choices for my epik app. 4th choice or so but I plan a trip there to see for myself and maybe move it up the list.

Are all the bars in the same area of town? What is the name of the dong? is it downtown?

Also, I hear there is an air force base there. I have nothing against the military personally but are there military bars or do they mix with teachers?

Foreigner bars are fun. However, unfortunately in South Korea they are usually populated with male Western English teachers Wink .

Try Golden Eagles. It is a British style bar. Very clean. Good staff. Good food and very central. Lots of foreigners there late on. It is in the street behind Paris Baguette across from Lotte Hotel. The guy that owns it is a shrewd guy and did his research in Britain and Ireland before deciding on a format. He traveled for 3 months in Europe to decide his theme. Where are Tombstone and Benchwarmers now? Gone! Because they were poorly planned, under-capitalized and dirty. Try the Eagles, you will not be disappointed.

Looks like this thread is due its latest ressurection Smile

Seems like a easy place to live down here (once I learn all the bus routes), have seen the Golden Eagle bar but not entered.

Hoping to explore more when the first wage packet comes...
