My fiancee (a Korean citizen) and I (US citizen) are getting married later this year. We will be living for a year or two in Korea before settling down in the states.

Unless I'm able to get a programming job somewhere, I'll be teaching. So I am in the midst of doing my research, and I have a few questions about visas:

1) Supposedly teaching privates with an E2 visa is illegal. I have seen nothing to the contrary, but my fiancee insists it's legal. Is there some place official I can find on the internet that states this restriction?

2) Shortly after the wedding I will be applying for residency - an F2 visa. Once I obtain it will I be free to teach privates?

Privates are illegal with an E-2 Visa

They are also illegal with and F-2 visa.


You can only do them if you have an F-4 visa. Only those who are ethnic Koreans can get an F-4 visa.

Yes Korea has some very strange and blatant racist laws. They think foreigners have ot so easy, but look at all the very unwelcoming restrictions non-Koreans face in Korea?

You want F2-1 visa.

Have your wife enroll at the local education department as an English tutor. She can set up teaching out of your home...you can 'help' ...volunteering to help your spouse is not illegal!

You should also know that by getting an F-2 visa means nothing in terms of teaching. You have an F-2, but you still need the E-2 to teach at a hogwon or university. So in the end, you have 2 visas. An E-2 is pretty useless unless you want to do something other than teach.

you won't get deported if you sport the lucky f2. a buddy of mine has been busted 3 times. had to pay a mil. won fine. ouch! with the E2, however, it's nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goooodbyyyeee!!

The law has CHANGED!!! It IS legal to teach privates; however, you MUST have permission from your employer (pref. in your contract itself), and you MUST report this income AND pay taxes on it. (which defeats the purpose for most people).

The people you are teaching to also have to report it in some fashion, if I am not mistaken.

one big problem with your post...he's not asking about teaching privates while working at a hogwon, he's asking about teaching only privates, therefore he will not be employed, therefore he can't ask his boss for permission, therefore it is not legal...

you can't teach privates legally on an F2 (we're talking strictly privates...and believe me, THAT subject has been hashed out time and time again!!)

if you continue working at a hogwon after marriage, you're losing the battle!!

at this point, you should be looking for a uni job at the very least...your marriage will cause you enough stress without all the extra crap a hogwon puts on you!
