I haven't been able to find any definitive answers on this....is there a cannabinoid portion to the drug test in Korea or is it just a TBPE drug test (which detects stimulants)? I'd appreciate if anyone could give me a current report on what the drug test in Korea now encompasses as I know it has changed over time.

Cannabinoids ARE tested for. It was brought back in late last year.

Stay off the 420 if you wish to teach abroad....thats seems like easy enough common sense...then again 420 is known to slow the mind. Laughing

In all seriousness, Tom gave you your answer OP. Best of luck. Very Happy

That's not true.

OP, detox before you come. They'll probably test you for it.
Although, not all med centers will.
Tom is usually one of the most informed here, so I'd give
his reply some thought.

If you're weighing the pros and cons of cannaboid testing and the amount of time you'd need to detox your system of a drug that gets you deported instantly, maybe you shouldn't be teaching children.

at ALL medical facilities?

i can only speak from experience, bu they didn't test at my hospital late last year. (the test consisted of them asking me if i smoked cannabis. yes, i'm serious.)

while i understand this was late last year, i haven't found any proof that they test at ALL medical facilities now. particularly outside of seoul. i know there was talk of it, but i honestly haven't seen it in practice.

that said, don't smoke cannabis and expect to get a job here. it's not worth the risk.

You know what is ignorant? This: "Alcohol: good. Marijuana: bad."

Studies of adults show no loss of intelligence from long term marijuana use, even among heavy users. (Did you know Carl Sagan did the 420?)

I recently spoke with a prostitute who had spent much of her life in jail. She said out of all the drugs she had done, alcohol ruined her life the most.

From the Current Events section of the forum:

Is Korea too soft on sex crimes?

According to the police, Cho served three years in jail under charge of injury resulting from rape in 1983 and has committed 14 other offenses, which have landed him in jail for another seven years and four months.

Quote:
The court said it took into consideration that Cho was drunk, and thus was weaker mentally and physically. Under the Korean law, when an intoxicated person commits a crime, the court can reduce a sentence.

This is what I can't comprehend. Why do people who commit crimes while drunk (including sex crimes) get a lower sentence?

Alcohol does so much damage to Korean society, which is why I don't understand the general attitudes towards it.

Marijuana is strictly illegal in Korea, but heavy drinking is tolerated and even encouraged. Which of the two has been shown to increase the incidence of violent behavior, and which has not? Do you know the answer?

Cullen Thomas got three and a half years in jail for bringing marijuana into the country (what he did hurt no one) and the rapist got three years in jail. Who should have gotten a longer sentence?

Look at this recent survey from the United States:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/lifestyle/general_lifestyle/august_2009/51_rate_alcohol_more_dangerous_than_marijuana

Quote:
Fifty-one percent (51%) of American adults say alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Just 19% disagree and say pot is worse.

Developing Brains: Alcohol Worse than Marijuana

Quote:
It appears that when it comes to teen brain development, parents should be more worried about alcohol abuse than marijuana abuse. Two recent studies have been published showing that alcohol -- a legal substance (though not legal for teens in the U.S.) -- is considered more dangerous than marijuana, which is illegal in many countries.

One study has been published in the U.S., in the journal Clinical EEG and neuroscience: official journal of the EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Society (ENCS), and shows that alcohol has a stronger effect on teen brain development than marijuana. The other is a study published in the Lancet, offering the results of substance classification by a number of U.K. professionals, purporting that alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana to individuals and to society.

Quote:
Findings from the U.S. study, showing that alcohol use in teens causes more irregular brain function than marijuana, would seem to square with efforts in the U.K. to encourage new drug classification. In the Lancet, David Nutt at Bristol University, along with his colleagues, asked psychologists and scientifically or medically trained police to rank different substances according to how harmful they are. The study purports that experts rank alcohol (and tobacco) as more harmful than marijuana. In a list of 20 substances, alcohol came in at number five, tobacco came in at number nine, and marijuana/cannabis came in at number eleven.

Where do these pro-alcohol/anti-marijuana sentiments in Korea come from? Could somebody please explain?

Wrong equation. Here's the right one.

"Alcohol: legal. Marijuana: illegal"

No, no don't thank me. I was happy to help.

And as an aside you do know that certain Korean websites do read this site and occasionally translate threads on here right? I don't think we need to see headlines like "Teachers on Dave's Eslcafe argue for illegal drug use."...

Yes I know that nobody here is arguing for it but don't expect the Korean Times/Herald to understand such subtle distinctions. Smile

So what? Kowtow to their demands in cyberspace, in our mind, our boards and speech?

As long as we're not violating any such law, then we are free to discuss these issues as we rationals wish.

Alcohol's much more detrimental to physiology than marajuana in so many ways. Aside from what's already been said, though inconclusive due to methodology, studies strongly suggest that short-term mem. loss is reversible, smoking is only slightly worse or on par with cigs, and psychosis is probably not caused by alcohol (except in "vulnerable populations") while alcohol is like napalm on the system. Lest we forget drunk driving+poor judgment, bar fights, mornings that made us glad that the night was a hole, and Korsakoffs.

So the argument now's-
Alcohol- legal. Marajuana- illegal.

Then, jaywalking, running reds, teaching sans co-teacher, porn, smoking in non-smoking area, downloaded movies - illegal.

Now, as a gambling man, I'd put money that most here breach the law in some way.

Just saying. While not ambrose, its far down the list of things that harm the body/mind compared with many, other legal substances.

There are plenty of places where "jaywalking" and watching porn isn't illegal unless it involves children or animals.
