|
|
Many posters read my past thread on how crazy my school is, and it seems there was more trouble today. All teachers were a-buzz today because a student that transferred to another school was part of a gang rape of a 1st grade female student. I guess it was in the news today and all the boys involved were arrested. Seriously screwed up.
edit: I should clarify that the attackers and the victim were from another school...only one of the attackers was a transfer student from my school. Nonetheless, teachers were upset because they knew him well. |

Yikes. Is this what kids are up to these days? In all seriousness, I hope they get served justice, although I'm not keeping my hopes up. |

"On Wednesday, a committee of parents, teachers and women's rights groups announced that several gang rape cases had taken place in an elementary school in Daegu involving more than 100 underage assaulters and victims since 2006....
"The investigative group said the assaulters tried to re-enact scenes from pornography they had seen on the Internet and cable TV...
" 'The shocking sexual violence in Daegu appears to have exposed diseases in our society,' the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper said in an editorial Friday, blaming pornography on the Internet and the lack of proper sex education.
" 'Now that pornography has become a textbook for children, various forms of sexual assault have become a reality. All the people in this society should share the responsibility for the case and set out some fundamental measures to address it' a spokesman of the committee said."

So these children are imitating what they see in gang rape porn? |

crazy.... i was just talking about this subject on tuesday. my friend from back in 2007 told me her students would tell her how they would re-enact porn with a bunch of friends. "sex parties." i totally did not believe her.
looking at my students, i didn't think ANY middle school student would be capable of this. they just look so small and dweeby.
well, i guess it really is true. really sad too, i wonder what steps are being taken to prevent these kind of things in the future. hearing stuff like this makes korea sound like a scary place in the future.
mollybloom, you don't happen to be located near deungchon are you? |

Oh, and a few weeks ago the social worker at our school visited a 3rd grade girl's house. The student was not home (it was night time) and the social worker asked her mother where she was. The mother said every night her daughter goes to the DVD bang to have sex. She also "gives her money" before she goes out, whatever the hell that means. So, her mother knows AND financially supports what she is doing, and doesn't really seem to care. So messed up.
It's so weird to go from teaching elementary school, in Gangnam, no less, to teaching where I do now. The most "sexual" the kids would ever get is talking about dongchims, which isn't sexual at all. Now I'm dealing with all the stuff in middle school. They sure do grow up fast. On other other hand, I have students that have girl/boy friends and want to puke if a friend teases them about kissing and won't even hold hands because of the fear of "skinship." You get these extremes that are rather jolting at times. |

Before I came to Korea, I met a Korean guy who seemed pretty cool.. not the normal introverted type but a sociable "guys' guy."
One time he, without the slightest hint of shame, told me about how in his days at university it was common practice to single out a girl at a party and get her drunk. Then after she'd pass out they'd determine who'd go first.
One time it was his lucky day. Upon committing the rape, he saw blood and became excited, thinking he had gotten "dak galbi" (a euphemism for a girl's virginity) but was dismayed when he then saw she had been wearing a pad and was merely on her period.
He found this memory hilarious. |

I've read a few of your posts in the past - and you seem like a nice, decent person!
I can kind of understand why you would feel the need to express your thoughts about this - but a public internet forum is not the place to do it!
This isn't about loving or hating korea/Koreans ect it's about professional standards!
Speaking about - something that could be quite easily be traced back to a specific school and specific children is just plain WRONG!
And for what it's worth I agree that the 'punishment' for sexual crimes in Korea are a joke! |

I think to a lot of us who have been here for a few years we find this kind of behavior strange for this society but acceptable in ours.
but the fact is when you actually compare it to our culture it is still VERY TAME. I mean come on I don't need to tell you guys what went on in our towns when we were 14 years old.. |

i think there needs to be more awareness about these kind of issues in korea. everything is so hush hush. next time you see a group of boys ganging up on or teasing a girl, you might think twice about what their actual intentions are.
i actually didn't believe this kind of thing would happen in korea. |

Hmmm. When I was 14, we were playing manhunt and riding our bikes on the bike trails in the forest near the golf course. We played some kissing games, but certainly weren't having sex. |

I agree that there should be more awareness - phone numbers to call ect (if there arent all ready) and more importantly much stricter punishments - But that doesnt alter the fact that 'you' as a teacher should not go on an open forum like this and disclose such info......
Not only are you breaking your contract very publicly - Im sure yours included the part about not disclosing sensitive info about your school...........
There is a chance - all be it a tiny one that someone involved in the case finds out/reads this thread - whether it be the family of the involved/police/lawyers ect! |
