The Korean beef generally sold at local stores is cut very poorly. Basically, they pass-off a lot of the fat as extra weight so they can make more money. You end up paying more for less, on top of the insane prices.
We eat American or Aussie beef when we can find it. |

| For those in the Seoul area, it's worth noting that High Street Market in Itaewon has excellent prices on Aussie beef. 4,500 for 500 grams of ground beef, 8,000 for a kilo. They also have some pretty awesome deals on steak, usually around 12,000 for 500 grams of sirloin, 24,000 for 500 grams of tenderloin, with a variety of other cuts at varying prices in the middle. |

Good info........isn't it weird that small independent markets can sell meat so much cheaper than big national supermarket chains? |

It's not a matter of can so much as being willing to. Anyway, one of the owners used to be a meat distributor or something so I think he cuts out the middle man. I'd also say that the meat I've purchased there is better than anything on offer at any of the major chains, at least for Western cooking. |

Couldn't agree more.
The thing is, Koreans are much like "sheep minded" and will do the exact same thing as everyone else and will believe in whatever propaganda they have been hearing since their early childhood. "Korean beef is the best, Korean pork is the best and all pork sold in Korea is from Jeju...."
As long as there are people who think that
-100,000Krw for a kilo of Hanu,
-40,000 Krw for a single fish and
-2,000 Krw for 1, otherwise completely tasteless pear is a fair price and they keep buying it, there will be no changes.
Just to remember, the minimal wage is under 5,000/hour... and there are millions making a living on that or even less, as a family. |

| Another issue, I recently learned, is that Korea has to import grass for those cows that are grass-fed. This is also, allegedly, why butter now costs 7,500 won. |

many more restaurants are serving American beef. They usually list it somewhere on a small out of the way sign.
I assume they keep the price difference as profit. Some offer the option between both cuts of beef. |

Korea still maintains serious impediments to beef imports despite recent liberalization. Canadian beef has been kept out and only yesterday was it announced that Canadian beef would be allowed into Korea following a 9 year ban. There are innumerable regulatory impediments to importing beef and there is a 40% tariff.
The 40% tariff raises the price directly, of course, and the regulatory restrictions further reduce the supply. The higher price from the tariff and the availability limitations means that the supply curve for beef has been shifted and the resulting price is far higher than what would occur in a free market.
Elimination of the tariff and elimination of the burdensome regulatory system plus the addition of Canadian beef in a free market environment would mean a minimum 50% reduction in Korean beef prices.
Government is the problem.
Liberty is the answer. |

Thanks for that info. That's $4 a pound for ground, $11 a pound for sirloin, and $22 a pound for tenderloin. It's even cheaper than Whole Paycheck! 
Korea's BADLY in need of a Trader Joe's. I miss my two buck chuck, $2/pound ground beef and $8.99 a pound, perfectly portioned, ribeye steaks damn it! Food prices higher than New York in a country that makes half the income is ridiculous. |

Don't trust the "Hoengseong hanwoo," labels.

Annulling a lower court's guilty verdicts for three people, including a suspect surnamed Kim, for violating the agricultural products quality control act, the Supreme Court returned the case to the high court, asking it to reconsider its decision.
The three were charged with purchasing some 500 cattle that were born in other regions and raising them in Hoengseong for around two months before butchering them between 2006 and 2009. They then distributed the beef as Hoengseong hanwoo.
A district court previously delivered not-guilty verdicts, saying there was no clear standard on labelling the origin of domestically raised livestock at the time the crime occurred.
However, an appellate court in February of this year delivered eight-month prison terms or suspended prison terms for the three, saying that two months of raising the cattle in Hoengseong was not enough to label the meat Hoengseong hanwoo.
"The lower court said that cattle raised in Hoengseong for less than two months are not Hoengseong hanwoo. The ruling did not properly interpret the agricultural products quality control act," the Supreme Court said in its ruling.
The ruling, however, only applies to cases that occurred before the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries adopted standards on place of origin for locally raised livestock.
The ministry in May of last year stipulated that livestock should be raised for more than 12 months at a certain area in order for it to be labeled as from there. (Yonhap)
