American pop singer Lady Gagas upcoming Seoul concert has been restricted to over-18s by the Korea Media Rating Board, as the Gender Ministry considers one of her songs to be performed at the show as inappropriate for minors.
The rating board's decision came after a series of complaints filed by conservative NGOs and Christian groups, who demanded Hyundai Card cancel the show on grounds that Lady Gaga promotes inappropriate behavior for youngsters, including homosexuality and mocking of religious figures.
The concert, which is slated to be held at Seouls Olympic Stadium on April 27, is the fourth foreign artist show to be banned for teenagers, according to KMRB. The first was Marilyn Mansons 2005 Seoul show, while the second and the third were American rappers 50 Cent and Jay-Z concerts both held in 2006.
A KMRB official, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the decision was largely due to Lady Gagas song titled Just Dance, which received a rating of R from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in November of last year. The Gender Ministry rated the piece as inappropriate for teenagers for its lyrics about clubbing and drinking. The show initially had a PG (age 12 and up) rating.
We believe the song 'Just Dance' will be performed during the upcoming concert, said the official. It will be against the law to allow teenagers to watch a performance of the song, which has been rated R.
The upcoming concert is the opener of Lady Gagas world tour. The artist is scheduled to perform in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand after the Seoul show. According to Hyundai Card, Korea is the only country that has prohibited teens from attending the concert.
Meanwhile, Korean Association of Church Communication, one of the local Christian groups who have been calling for the cancellation of Gagas show, said they were relieved to hear the news. |

hip hop arrived very late in Korea, even when bands like SOLID came onto the scene their style of hip hop was more soul style with some rapping verses in the song, it wasn't till about 2000 when we started to see hip hop bands emerge onto the scene, get radio time, get on music bank, and start to be setting trends, Drunken tiger being one of the first. then many bands burst onto the scene and hip hop, rap was cool, around 2002-2006 the fashion all turned to hip hop, girls were all wearing baggy pants, hoodies and von dutch trucker hats were all the rage, hip hop bars where opening up as fast as edm clubs where, but hip hop couldn't sustain themselves without copying each other to much in music, so eventually the people got bored of it and the music scene shifted into dancy catchy techno bubble gum lyrics , with stars wearing sexy clothes, so they brought sexy back. and I think guys prefer to see girls dressed in daisy dukes rather than your brothers pants and hoodies.
so now we are in the techno, dancy europop beats music scene. I am sure it will shift again. maybe Korea might get into a real alternative rock scene like we saw in the early 90's in England and USA. who knows. but I think this wondergirls, 2pm scene really can't go on to much longer.
but regarding clubs, hip hop bars are still popular, plenty of people like Hip Hop, but the culture is just to negative for mainstream Koreans to accept. I mean walking around Hip hop clubs in seoul is just a joke LOL
wannabies wearing their pants under the butt, white banners on their heads, trying to look like a criminals and hard asses, come on. get over yourself.
no wonder Hip hop is taken off the music bank here. I mean hip hop just preaches negativity. the whole fighting poverty, and struggling to get out of the ghetto is getting real old now.
got anything new? |

And I'm sure they'll do a fine job of keeping them out, what like the bars in Korea do at keeping out the underage and checking IDs or like R-Rated movies, Explicit Lyrics records, TV-MA, and internet pornography screens that ask "Are you 18?"
This is the Korean equivalent of that. A gesture to the right-wing that they know will do absolutely nothing to stop it. The same way R-Rated or TV-MA works. The FCC has standards in American media, doesn't mean there is a massiver governmental conspiracy. Again, its called bureaucracy. |

K-pop sucks. Only Koreans and a handful of Japanese and French people like it. But it's OK that they like it, because people can listen to whatever kind of music they want. That goes for everyone in this thread, too.

These three countries (FJK) have one thing in common - CULTURAL SOPHISTICATION.

Yes quite a funny comment that one.. France is also only really culturally sophisticated as long as its to do with French things ie; music, food, language. They can be a bit frosty to outside culture, especially English culture! |

Not sure if joke or Korean supremacist...
Are you seriously implying that K-pop is sophisticated? I will just leave you with an excerpt from the current number one song in Korea, translated into English, with no color commentary at all. It speaks for itself.

I'm going to go out on a limb and postulate that the average #1 song in most countries is not exactly the finest verse out there. |

I won't disagree with you there, but most people will not argue that the popular mainstream music in their country is "culturally sophisticated," even if they happen to like it. That poster was claiming that countries that listen to K-pop are more culturally sophisticated than others, which is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on Dave's (outside of the Current Events forum, at least). My point is not that other countries have more sophisticated pop music than Korea, just that K-pop is not sophisticated. |

That might be because it was sarcasm.

^^ I think it's apparent that Moondoggy actually meant it (he's come out with similar remarks before)

Hmm. If it was a serious statement, that's pretty funny stuff.
It shows a very open-ended (I'm being generous here ) concept of the word 'sophistication' as well.
If liking K-pop shows "cultural sophistication", I guess we could also say the same about Jersey Shore, WWF, and NASCAR fans. Interesting. Those things are also 'huge' but it doesn't make them good.
Way to flip the script, Moondoggy! Now suddenly the K-pop fans are the snobby ones because they are somehow 'culturally sophisticated'!
You're a true sophist.
By the way, people, nobody is saying you can't listen to K-pop, they're just saying it sucks and giving various reasons as to why it sucks.
Huge difference there.
If liking copied, cut and paste, late to the party, whiny, annoying, repetitive, auto-tuned kid's music is your guilty pleasure, ...good for you!
But don't expect others to respect it or like it too. And don't try to mask it in terms like 'cultural sophistication' when it's the opposite of it.
I like some crappy, stupid, embarrassing music too. But I don't complain when others make fun of it. |

The pathetic thing is this. Pop music (the good and the bad) is a Western cultural product. Koreans have adopted it (the very, very worst of it unfortunately) added some really effeminate boys and annoying synchronized dances - and tried to sell it back to the west as a 'Korean' cultural product. That might pass in other Third World countries, but selling a Western cultural product back to the West as ssentially 'Korean'(and wrapping it up in Korean nationalism/ self esteem for goodness sake) is just beyond rediculous. They think that because they can take one Western product - say, the car or television - and sell it back to the West, and have Westerners buy it, that they can do the same with cultural products.
Pathetic. |
