Well, now i feel guilty, so...
Mid tier Uni, not in Seoul
2.7
400 housing
12 hrs a week, usually with 2 "overtime" hours which pay garbage 15/hr
other assorted ot--toeic,camps, yada yada usually around 30
no camps--yet thank god
full vacay-5 months
good management
No, I will not recommend someone i met on an internet forum--lol |

I see Ewha has an ad posted on Dave's for a position. Their contract conditions seem to have deteriorated. Only 6 weeks vacation now per break, manditory duties during each break, manditory writing clinic work.
I have heard that there is no housing and no severance.

heh-heh. Funny you would say that, but I do know of some mods who work here and can make threads "automagically" discapear. me i have tin foil, so i'm good to go. If you don't think there are snitches and suck ups in the world--more power to ya |

Central Seoul
3.4 a month
12 hours a week (credit courses + you can create your own classes if you want) and you can make your timetable, one day off a week.
5 months vacation a year (no obligation to work camps but if you do I hear the pay is great)
Average class size is about 9 students.
Good administration that leave you alone.
Two-year contracts.

There is much, much more to a university job than money some schools that pay more are really tough places to work with really demanding administrations. Some schools that pay less are nice places to work.
Money is not the only issue , rather it is overall quality of life you have while working at the school.
If your university is a high pressure and very demanding school then it is not worth the extra money. Not even close.
There are schools that pay more but treat their instructors terrible.
Money is only one factor that ought to be considered.
My advice is look for a nice place to work . |

The shame is that this is one of the better jobs out there, short of a Ph.d. Still, it isn't better than what I have worked up to at my place, given several years of service and housing stipend (knock on wood we still get it). Your base hours and class size are better. We are 15 base and 20-25 per class, average.
This is by no means me tooting my horn. It's me being sad that I will likely take a pay cut wherever I go, should I need to. Does your school have term limits? |

That's a good job and in central Seoul. Not too many like it for foreigners in Korea. |

I don't disagree , and I am certainly not apologizing for low paying universities (though there are ways to make them at least some of them work out pretty well by doing easy extra work ) just wanted to tell everyone to "be careful who they dance with" cause some universities -more than a few are really tough and miserable even horrible places to be at where you will have little peace of mind during the entire term and maybe past that. That they pay more doesn't come close making up for it.
If you end up spending 15 hours a week -or more correcting papers and another 12 hours a week preparing for class another 2 -3 hours doing paper work for class in addition to teaching your regular 12 hours each week , and your school is super sensitive about evaluations and you have to grade on a curve and your in charge professor or the like is a jerk then your job isn't so great even if you are doing better than 3.4 M .
It is not close to worth it. At least in my opinion it isn't . |

No housing and work condiitons seem to be going downhill fast. They're micromanaging everything with a Korean director and assistant. Some of the instructors there think they're trying to force out all the old hands.
Still, all things compared, it's one of the better jobs. Everyone got bonuses over the winter just because their department had been getting great evaluations. |

I keep waiting for another "oh, crap!" moment for institutions here, when they realize that not enough teachers are applying for positions. Alas, we're probably going to have 4 more years of Obama and 4 more years of this glorious "change" we have been experiencing *not*. This means we'll see far more applicants around for at least a few more years, and a lot of people in canceled public school jobs who want to stay willing to work for less.
One trend I have noticed is some long-termers with families are beginning to take off and move back home (mostly Canadians, due to the economy there). That is not necessarily good, as some of them simply feel that, with the cost of living increases and dropping job quality in Korea, they may as well head home. |
