Heya,
I'm coming to Seoul in three weeks, going to be in the Bundang area.
Looking for Judo or BJJ clubs in the area
Can anyone tell me if this place is still alive?
http://bjj.co.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=notice&wr_id=130
I can sound out hangul, but it doesn't really make a difference when I don't know what the sounds mean. As such I don't know if this page is still relevant. |
That's Heesung Lee's school mentioned in the previous posts. There's also a "For Foreigner" section of the site in English. The gym is near Ahyun/Ehwa. Pretty far from the Bundang area. In case you didn't know, it's a different city altogether |

Anyone here study or know of any teachers who teach ba gua zhang in Korea. I was reading on the internet that some famous teachers from China migrated to Korea and taught this art back in the days. I would be interested in learning this style. I was exposed to briefly in the U.S. |

According to a Naver search,
Here's one near Seolleung Station. It's owned by former World Titlist Hong Soohwan, so I'm guessing it has to be legit. I actually walked by the place once and watched people train. The facilities were kinda small but most boxing gyms are in Korea.
http://www.hongsoohwan.co.kr/
Here's one in Apgujeong. Judging by the pictures, the place looks bigger than most gyms I've seen.

One thing you should keep in mind is that most Korean boxing gyms cater to the weekend warrior types, as most people these days aren't trying to be fighters. So even if it has the word "diet" in front of it, it doesn't always mean it's not a legit place with good instruction. |

Do you think this trainer would do well at one of the local "diet boxing" gyms?

I saw that before and the guy is pretty funny. My trainer does scream and cuss at you when training for a fight too, but he's real nice when he's not training you. I actually like that video because seeing how nonathletic and uncoordinated those guys are makes me feel like a world champ. I didn't grown men could be so weak. |

Actually BJJ gets very little attention here. I think they price it like that because it's how most gyms over the world do it. But I feel if you're in Korea, it's better to do judo or boxing simply due to the price.

I would try judo first. If you find that you enjoy the groundwork after a few months and really want to focus on just that, switch to BJJ. Don't do it the other way around.
Osu! |
Any particular reason for that? Having done both, I don't think it really matters which one you do first.
The "problem" (if you see it as a problem) with judo in Korea is that many gyms don't focus on the ground work although it depends on the gym. From my experience, only the really experienced guys are good at ground work. If submissions are your thing, you'll have to search for a gym that will do more ground work. I've been to 3 different judo gyms and only one of them actually had pure groundwork sessions with sparring but even that was only once in a blue moon. |
I only say that because today judo is lighter on groundwork than the old days because of the direction the sport has gone in. So if you want to really learn the ground game, you may as well go for BJJ. In judo it will take a long time to learn the ground work. I'm a 3rd dan in judo and though it only took me a couple months to get blue in BJJ, I am outclassed on the ground against people with far less years under their belt. |
