Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as Top Gun, Days of Thunder and Beverly Hills Cop II, died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge, authorities said.
The 68-year-old Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said.

I'm a little surprised that he was in a suitable mindframe to do this. He seemed in pretty fine form with Unstoppable a couple of years back.
Maybe not a fair comparison, but he always seemed intellectually overshadowed by his older brother(though even Ridley wasn't beyond churning out the populist crowd-pleasers several times in a row). I gather the goth kids had a bit of a crush on The Hunger(which I've seen but can't remember), but Top Gun will likely be remembered as just another Reagan era rah-rah piece.
I did quite enjoy The Fan, which combined the basic contours of a stalker-thriller with a Death Of A Salesman-type character study. And Enemy Of The State is a pretty decent political thriller, eerily foreshadowing the current era.

Yeah, that was my guess: some incurable disease. I think I would have waited a bit longer and made peace with everyone/everything first, but each to his/her own. I suppose someone whose personality and image was so focused on action and movement would want to have 100% of that energy and drive until the end... |
