could someone who does use a proxy explain the basics of this and how best to go about doing it?

I know what a proxy is basically but am curious about the limits and how secure it can be.

I've googled around but much of what comes up is over my head; I need a place to start if someone could be so kind? thanks!

That depends on what you want to use it for, can you provide any more information?

Proxies can be range from secure to very unsecure. Plus what kind of service are you using through the proxy.

In general - free proxies will likely be unsecure. With free, you are depending on the kindness of strangers. Paid for and known(friend/affiliated) proxies will be secure.

People can setup proxies to leech information (like cookies and password). They can even be used to filter information like block porn sites. As to using SSL through a proxy, I need to do research. But I suspect if the proxy allows you can encrypt between them using SSL.

Also one other point to consider is where the proxy is located. The proxy may be secure, but it could be between unsecure routes. Plus where located can affect the timing or cause lags.

One other problem with proxies is they can be blocked. Some sites do keep a list of proxy servers/services. Or they use software to determine in a user is using a proxy.

One of the most easy is a blacklist. Website keep up to date lists of proxy servers. If a request comes from an IP that is a known proxy server, it is blocked. If you can see a list more then likely so can anybody else.

Another is to analyze the IP connection. If the timing is to long may be coming from a long distance. Or other variables.

Another is headers. Many web browser pass on information to web servers. Hi, can I connect. I am using Firefox... Plus I using Korean version of encoding... If something is hinky, it might be blocked.

If you want a basic dummies guide. Consider reading the wiki page.

skippy - thanks so much for the enlightenment, I appreciate it.

I had googled but don't recall a wiki page coming up but that's a good idea, should have thought of it.

What is exactly you want to use a proxy for?

To bypass security/Internet blocking at public school?

To hide your location from authorities. This proves useful for going to places like poker sites, really really bad porn sites, political activism, etc.

Hiding you location from media service providers like HULU or NETFLIX.

There are various programs and extensions that can help with security concerns.

One good program I like for privacy is peerblock or peerguardian. I think peerblock is still good. Basically it is a program that runs in the background and using lists if you or somebody else tries to connect to your computer you will be blocked. It can be useful for blocking ad or keep antip2p groups from seeing you.
