Finally have my online app finished. Next step

servers and hosts.

What do I need to do? (in Korea).

get an IP address? how? where?
get a domain name? how? where?
design my website or hire a consultant? what are the options?

rent a server or buy my own?

number of users = 150 but need room for growth (lots I hope).

thanks

From your post, it sounds like this is your first time setting up a website, and you're a little bit clueless (I don't mean that in a derogatory way - I was exactly the same as you once).

I would first suggest you check out this site:

http://www.thesitewizard.com/

It really helped me understand what I needed to know.

From your information I think you need to define 'App' before we can help you.

Buzzword like wut

Thanks artyom, that is a help. No worries on 'clueless' but 'novice' is possibly better.

Ha ha Jammo, I had to look up 'wut' to see what you were talking about. App = application, in that I have a web based application to allow students to practice at home/school/etc.

To be more specific, I wanted to know about prices of hosts, what to expect from a host provider, and what to watch out for regarding rip-offs/cowboys. What service I can expect and what about addition charges that may or may not be legit.

included in hosting.

What's the app built on? How resource intensive is it?

I use hostgator for my sites, they may not be the best depending on what you need, but their support is great and always fixes my stuff quickly when the viagra spammers hack them. I ran a facebook app off of their baby package a few years back with no issues.

I've also used beyondhosting dot net for running P202. A bit pricier, but their support is also excellent.

For a registrar, I moved everything I care about to internet.bs.

Godaddy will try to upsell you on all kinds of useless trash, like business registrations. Namecheap is decent, but renewal fees are too high. Both have obnoxious UIs.

internet.bs gives free private whois and is pretty good about not caring about complaints against your domains if you...you know Wink. Never hit them up for support.

If you want a .kr I believe you have to go through a korean registrar. Shouldn't really matter unless the .com you want is taken. You can just get a .info if you want to do it on the cheap.

If you need an SSL cert, it's gonna cost you extra

You can use a free CMS like wordpress and set it up yourself without having to get too technical and just run the app itself on a subdomain or something. A nice wp-theme is only like $25.

It all depends what you want out of the site, but wordpress is stupid easy to use. It's a 1-click install with fantastico if your host has it in the CP.

Designers/coders can get expensive, but it all depends on how you value your time and what you need the site to do.

google analytics and webmaster tools will give you all the free analytics you need, but I prefer getclicky over g. analytics
