Three teenage girls jumped to their deaths from an apartment building in Busan, police said Wednesday.
Their bodies were found around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on the rooftop of a five-story building in Gwangan-dong, where they fell after jumping from the top of a 15-story apartment building, according to police.
Police found bottles of soju and the girls belongings on the rooftop of the apartment building. Footage of the CCTV inside the apartment elevator showed the three girls going up to the rooftop several hours before they were found.

What a tragedy.
Part of the article read:
Teenage suicide has risen as a serious social issue, as an increasing number of young people in the nation are choosing to end their lives.
------
It also read that one of them suffered depression. How many more dead will it take for more people to confront this problem head on? |

It's very sad that they choose to end their lives. RIP.
I hate to say it but Korea is one big pot of pressure cooker about to explode. They need to smile more. |

What are they supposed to do, exactly? Asians have been engaging in high-pressure examination culture for ages. I mean for God's sake, I was just reading an old Korean tale called the 춘향전, and the main character is a young man studying for the state examinations, and whose ultimate success is gained through passing them with the highest marks. Whatever the lesson is there, it's certainly not, "Hey, go spend your childhood playing in a meadow." This is what East Asians are inclined towards, probably at a genetic level. You're not going to turn that around with your soppy, Western-style "awareness campaigns" or whatever you have in mind. |

I think you mixed up the posters. I want kids to play and zack wants awareness.
It may be genetic, caused by generations of resources allocated to the best test takers. Seems like a waste of life. But we gotta compete! |

I didn't mix things up, I merely merged your cases together, because really, you're making the same core point in different clothing: East Asians should stop being East Asians.

One size doesn't fit all. Tons of things people do seem like a waste of life to me. |

Wasn't there a number of group suicides in Korea a few years back, where people would meet in chat rooms and agree to kill themselves when the met in person?
What a crazy world we live in.... |

Maybe they can't. Besides, the notion that happiness is an end in itself is vapid. Great for selling counselling sessions and self-help books to dupes, but of very little real substance. |

Infinite amount. Korea will not confront the problem until society itself realizes that depression and suicide are mental health issues and that mental health issues are not issues of immorality or shame. |

We took a closer look at this issue in a class I teach.
Turns out the rate of suicide doubled after the IMF came to town and drastically "restructured" things in favor of upper management (jobs cut or converted to part-time with no benefits, lower salaries, etc).
Also seems George Soros (chums with IMF) significantly contributed to the '97 economic crisis in Asia by buying and then abrubtly selling huge quantities of Thai bhat. |
