A quick and interesting quiz that shows where you fall on the political spectrum. I always thought of myself as just left of center. Well, I got the left of center part right. Wayyyy left.

Well, evidently, as one moves leftwards along this spectrum, there's the moderate democrat, then the average democrat, then the liberal democrat, then the socialist, then the oh-my-god-you-betrayed-the-market-gods communist, and then there's me, who is evidently about as liberal as liberals can get. Am I really the Platonic Form of liberalism, or are the vague questions just poorly chosen and lacking nuance?

It labels me a liberal democrat.

Shenanigans.

Conservative Republican. Even though I support gay marriage rights and think abortion (except perhaps late-term) should be legal, and despite the fact that I'm not religious.

There's no way I would vote for either of the current candidates, Republican or Democrat. Seems like a pretty useless survey to me...

The mandatory party identifier shows you how codswollop this quiz is.

Here's the Political Compass, courtesy of poster OTOH years ago.

And here's a party identifier posted more recently.

Slight upward left movement, but pretty consistent. Nice seeing you again Gandhi. How have things been?

On economic issues: about 3mm away from "Very Conservative"
On social issues: about 3mm away from "Very Liberal"

If that makes me an "Average Republican" as the site claims, then this country is full of Libertarians who don't know they're Libertarians.

Stop the presses!!

I scored 'liberal Democrat'. Very Happy

I would like to submit another question for inclusion in future surveys of this kind: How much of a tingle up your leg do you feel when you hear 'Dixie'?

Economic Left/Right: -4.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.23

On the social libertarian front I'm pretty far beyond the mainstream. I doubt that there will ever be a viable candidate that truly appeals to me, but I do tend to be much more interested in foreign affairs than domestic politics.

My students were having a blast with this rendition earlier today. I had it on as they came in and they spontaneously started clapping along.

Highlight of my work week.

Economic Left/Right: -5.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.56

For me, but...wonder how that compares on the right to left scale, and even though there are more questions, they are not any more nuanced.

I think I plopped in the oh-my-god-you-betrayed-the-market-gods communist zone, or at the very least just shy of it as a socialist, so you're not alone over there at the extreme left end.

Apparently my take on economic issues is a bit milder than my take on social issues.

Don't like the lack of a neutral option in either quiz. There are some questions that really just don't strike a chord with me and I don't like being forced to go one way or the other.

Take for instance the charity versus social security question. I think both are useful resources for the needy. I don't want to prioritize one over the other. And although I understand the higher purpose behind the question, I don't like being pigeonholed on that particular issue. Wealthy people should donate to charities and the government should provide assistance in tandem.

Or the abstract art question. Again, I know what it's getting at with the question, so I adjusted my response based on what it's really asking rather than what my personal opinion is of abstract art.

Anyway...
