How can you be here for the money, teaching English doesn't pay much right?

Anyhow it's amusing because when I talk to guys making six digits in some boring cube in the states they are envious of this lifestyle, yet you guys are HERE NOW and seem to hate it and want to go back THERE!

It all depends on how efficiently you can market yourself. Teaching English can and does (in a number of cases) pay well. Having an E-2 does limit you in some ways but there are always legal loopholes to be exploited.

As for your second point. When I stop liking what I'm doing...I may go back or more likely to another country. I wouldn't have stuck this long around if I hated it.

Teaching English can pay as much as you want it too, if you have the right credentials, and are willing to take risks.

To put some perspective on the whole lifestyle and money thing I currently teach maths in a country school in NZ. My time in Seoul turned me from a single 20 something with no assets, a student loan and lacking self confidence, into a married 30 something with three kids, some money in the bank, qualified teacher of an in demand subject.

I'm currently living in a village of 400. This evening I spent an hour fishing at the local lake, alone with just the sound jumping trout and the beautiful sunset for company. Our house is on an acre section and costs $150 a week in rent. I teach from 9-3pm and don't need to do an awful lot of extra admin work.

Yet sometimes I find myself looking back to the good old days in Seoul. Seoul has a heck of a lot going for it, if you go out and look for it.

As of today, I fly back and forth to work in a TIE fighter, eating fried chicken and pickled radishes, drinking those gigantic plastic bottles of Cass Red, while legions of gold-plated Korean cheerleaders on the ground dance naked for me. Finally, I am successful.

My awesome post about the English teacher who interrupted by a student while watching porn was nuked.

Edward, was it you who complained? Now I'm suspicious...

It's a bit abstract, but sounds pretty good.

I pulled it. This is a professional ESL board and the thread was going in a direction that is not appropriate.

^ Yes but it was real industry happenings, however dark and perverse, unlike most of the unrelated to ESL nonsense that goes on here.

My pulling of the thread is not open for discussion. In the future, it is ideal to contact a Mod regarding pulled threads, not publicly calling people with little or no evidence as to why it was pulled.

Back to the topic of this thread, please.

Haha! Hey don't get this thread taken down, I think it's a really good topic to discuss.

Anyhow, Kimchininja what industry do you work in? I want to hear more about it actually.

As for success... well it's difficult to measure. I think most of us here want to eventually realize some dream and goal. Some of us here seemed to have already done it. Some are on their way to doing so, and others have just realized what they need to be done.

I suppose everyone's in different stages in their life here.

I'm making $12,295,833 won/month salary at the current exchange rate (yes I like to be exact!). Cool

In order to make money in KR you need to already have skills and then enter KR via a global corporation. Entering KR first and and then trying a land a job doesn't seem to work.

I've seen people try to "level up" here, who have good skills outside of teaching English (like computer programmer, finance, etc) but it's near impossible. There are no jobs here other than English teacher / military, for the most part. But if you work for Microsoft/Apple/Whatever back home, you can work out a deal where you get transferred to one of their foreign offices. My route was 1) pick such a corporate, 2) get hired in US office, 3) negotiate move to KR, done.

This is the awesomeness of free travel and adventure while making big bucks and is a mega win/win for you, plus cool firms mostly don't care where you are these days as long as you get the job done.

...the other cool route would be to do a job you can do anywhere (like web design) from KR, be your own boss, loads of fredom, make decent money.

Doesn't anyone have student loans anymore? Seems all these new foriegners have no debts anymore. So, they can all go out and upgrade their qualifications and get whatever job and money's no object. Must be nice.

Question

Pretty much everyone I met in Korea had loans, most of them already so onerous that they didn't think much of adding to them in order to improve their qualifications.
