While typing on a small android phone as I walk down the street?
Why should I be bothered? |

"McAfees life has turned in recent years from cybersecurity to drugs, guns, prostitution and violence, explained Jeff Wise, a freelance reporter..."
Seems legit? Would I trust him with my computer's security?
A big no on both counts!
Would I buy him a beer if I met him?
Maybe. |

The link is about a killer who was a major contributor to the OED. |

Yes...but the OED is a product...while McAfee is a service.
The first doesn't require trust in any one individual while the second does...yes? |

Huh? Both are products. Plus, I wouldn't think that, at this point, the performance of the product (service) is dependent on what the company founder is currently doing regarding something totally unconnected with the product. The company has gone way beyond one man writing the software code. |

Ahhh...ok.
You are making the same point I was getting at. The OED is now far removed from that one contributor...so far in fact that it really has no relevance to purchasing that product today.
I was just assuming that the OP was making a comment on the trustworthiness of the service in question...not on the morality of using that service now that the source has been tainted...so to say. |

Couldn't he have back doors installed in the code? That must have occurred to you so I'm curious as to why you didn't think it would be an issue? |

What? Why would I think all of a sudden that a product that's been going strong for years has some backdoor code? There's absolutely nothing in the company's history to show that the anti-virus is anything else other than what the company purports it to be.
But, sure, why not? When the man first created the program, he said to himself, "Dang, I better make sure that there's some backdoor code that I can access in 25 years because, you know I'm just going to have to kill someone then. Oh, yeah, and it won't matter that I won't even own the company by that time. What's Intel going to do to stop me? It's not like they'll have people scrubbing the code and writing new programs when they acquire my company." |

I'm reading Paul Allen's book "Idea Man: A Memoir by the Co-founder of Microsoft," and a lot of the coding they did in the very early years hung around longer than just 1.0 to 2.0 DOS, for example. So he writes. It wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility for an architect to want something in there to go around the changes the people who bought his company/baby make. Coding can be a work of art to dedicated programmers (so he infers), and they do all they can to preserve it in future re-writes. Microsoft now has 40,000 employees (allegedly) so surely that amount of code must contain the potential for some to be hidden?
BTW I'm not a programmer so go easy |
