A friend is coming to Korea to visit, and is asking about free wifi hotspots. Does anyone know if the subway has free wifi?

No, it does not. There is wifi there for people who have telephone accounts, or paid accounts through telecoms for other devices like the IPad, etc.

I'm not sure if you can pay for short term, but you can buy an "egg" that will receive the signal as part of a paid account and then your wifi device can see that as an access point.

You can also rent an egg from the KT Olleh counter at Incheon airport. You can reserve online, too.

5,000 KRW a day for the wifi only egg. 8,000 KRW a day for wifi and korean 3g service. unlimited data use. Deposit is 100,000 KRW and 150,000 KRW respectively (obviously, you get that back).

Warning: my friend had difficulty when she tried to use a Visa debit card to rent a phone. They insisted it had to be an actual credit card. Not sure if this a real thing or just something the staffer insisted upon that day.

Not really, if you have an Internet at your place set up with one of the big companies. Why not get a MAC Address / WiFi Account on YOUR account. KT does it for about 9000won a month.

You will need to get their MAC address for their device. Careful you get the one from the WIFI modem.

there are quite a few paid options
go to one of the kt global centres
they have day passes and all sorts, depending on your existing kit
it's worth chatting to them

So, all of these Ohello and T-Wifi hotspots I see, they have nothing to do with SIM cards or phone contracts... right? They are independent WiFi providers and you can have a contract with them regardless of whether or not you have a smartphone or a WiFi tablet?
