|
|
I have a rooted HTC Desire that has been paid off (2 year contract completed) through SK Telecom.
Will my phone work (calling and data) in Canada while I'm there for a short vacation?
I searched the forums and it seems like all one has to do to is to unlock it with their carrier and get a new sim card in Canada.
Can anyone confirm if this information still holds true, or has the process changed and is there something else that needs to be done?
Thanks in advance for any info |

| If it uses a sim-card and it is unlocked then the answer is 100% YES! |

Depends on what network you want to be on. It will undoubtedly work with the major providers.
Check the network frequencies for the providers .vs. your phones supported frequencies.
eg. 900 / 1900 / 2100 mHz etc.
I have an LG Optimus 2X (Korean version), it does not support 1700 like the North American version does. So it will not work with the 3G of TMobile, or Wind/Mobilicity in Vancouver.
p.s. Anyone know of a Korean version Android that supports 1700/2100?

i tried to unlock my phone through SK telecom and was informed that the telecom company doesn't unlock the phone, but the maker of the phone can only unlock the phone...in my case: HTC Desire.
Can anyone confirm if this is true? |

Can't confirm that but can confirm that most if not all android phones will work on either the Telus or the Bell networks.
$10 for a SIM
choose the plan you want (I just got a $40, 1 month plan: unlimited evenings, weekends, 100mb data and $.20/min for calls not covered in the "unlimited" talk times)
Total bill: $63.

update:
i have an htc desire bravo (dinosaur...i know). sk telecom doesn't lock their phones anymore. this was confirmed at both the head office and their incheon airport office.
went to all the carriers in vancouver and the conclusion was that the phone was unlocked but would not accept the north american sim cards because my phone was on a different bandwidth.
one retailer offered to reconfigure something on my phone so that it would work on the north american networks. i was told that "reconfiguring" my phone involved a couple hours, some software changes and a small fee. i opted to just buy a cheapo pay as you go phone instead. |
