Transit officials are launching a widespread campaign to warn riders to steer clear of the platform�s edge, following dozens of incidents last year in which people were struck and killed by trains.
Subway cars, stations and platforms were plastered this week with color posters warning, �Don�t become a statistic.�
Those posters � in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Russian � feature a colorful rendering of a person peering down the tunnel for a train next to the admonition, �Standing at the platform edge is dangerous!�
As if that�s not enough, the agency is also releasing a flood of Facebook and Twitter messages telling riders, �Stand away from the platform�s edge.�
Unbelievable. Either save taxpayer money and let these people remove themselves from the gene pool, or use that money on real solutions like protective barriers.
But I suppose NYC is too busy arguing about mosques, soft drinks, and cigarettes.  |

Yeah, in the news vid I watched, the mayor was talking about how sad it was, and he wishes there was something they could do.
Right away I thought of the scree/suicide doors we have here in korea. Not a 100% fix, but pretty effective, IMO. |

You should ease up on NYC. They just went through this. Their subways not too long ago looked like this. |

I could accept that if they weren't wasting time and money on non-solutions like the above. Doing nothing actually might be better than throwing money at multiply translated poster and Facebook campaigns. It just screams feel-good awareness circle-jerk.
On a side note, I am troubled by this recent run of disagreements. I suppose I could be misremembering, but I thought we tended to agree on most subjects floated around this board? Stray not further towards the dark side! |

A mumbling woman pushed a man to his death in front of a subway train on Thursday night, the second time this month someone has been killed in such nightmarish fashion, police said.
The man, who wasn't immediately identified, was standing on the elevated platform of a 7 train in Queens at about 8 p.m. when he was shoved by the woman, who witnesses said had been following him closely and mumbling to herself, New York Police Department chief spokesman Paul Browne said. It didn't appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said.
The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.
It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed.
On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was shoved in front of a train in Times Square. A photograph of him on the tracks a split second before he was killed was published on the front of the New York Post the next day, causing an uproar and debate over whether the photographer, who had been waiting for a train, should have tried to help him and whether the newspaper should have run the image. Apparently no one else tried to help up Han, either. |

A horrible way to be removed from the gene pool for being dumb and unaware of the nature of things at the subway or train stop. You realize most people would not go along with you on this. |

They didnt know each other. She killed him because she thought he was a "Muslim terrorist" according to news reports, and she was reportedly undergoing a psych evaluation.

@To all those that say NYC should get suicide doors, that will never happen.
It might get proposed, voted on, maybe even financed, but it won't come to fruition as the MTA has been a corrupt cash siphon for decades. |

New York City police say a young woman stumbling around on a Manhattan subway platform not far from Times Square fell onto the tracks and was killed by a train.
The accident happened at around 5 a.m. on New Year's Day at the No. 2 line station on 34th Street and Seventh Avenue. That's one stop from where revelers gather in Times Square to see the ball drop.
Police say the victim was in her 20s. Her name wasn't immediately released.
Subway deaths are common in the city. Last year, according to a report in the Daily News, there was about a fatality a week.  |

How many are suicides? How many are natural deaths (such as heart attacks)? How many are criminal? How many die on the Seoul subway? Tokyo? Moscow? If they ran 24/7, I'm sure incidents such as what happened with the woman on New Years would be more frequent in those cities..
Not meaning to sound like an apologist, but out of all the dangers in the world, the NYC subway isn't near the top of the list. |

| The city that I am with a metro of about 1 million has had 4 people hit by cars and either killed or critically injured in just two weeks. Two of them have been transient drunks that wonder around heavy traffic and then stumble into the traffic off of the sidewalks or just cross in front. The city has a huge transient population. They hang around with each other screaming and throwing stuff at cars. We saw one almost get hit by a car while driving around one day. The city spends money on winter shelters and the drunk buses come by and pick them up so they don't freeze to death. They should have shelters to keep them from freezing to death, but it should be forced and should be a type of cell where they don't just get out and walk around and get drunk the following morning. |
