After living abroad so long being called fat doesn't seem that offensive. I've been called fat. I've heard Korean students make fun of each other for being fat numerous times. I asked a middle school class to compare themselves to an animal as a homework assignment. One middle school girl wrote that she was like a pig because she was fat and liked to eat a lot. Americans place a lot of emphasis on self esteem- make people feel good about themselves whether they're fat, lazy, ignorant or whatever. I wonder if there will be a lawsuit this time.... |

| I agree that most of us who've lived in Korea/Asia aren't quite as sensitive about it, but that's still a completely unacceptable way for a customer to be treated. |

wasn't there something similar about an Asian person in starbucks or something.. called them Slant eyes or something, I forget..
but yeah servers need to come up with better ways to remember their customers.. LIKE TABLE NUMBERS! DUH! |

That was one of my first reactions. Someone like Psy is fat but calling those girls fat is a total understatement. |

There have been a few cases like that. Some people are too sensitive. I doubt it would make the news in Korea if a western customer was called "big nose" on receipt. |

I can tell you right now, if I were to receive a receipt with "big nose" written on it, my response would not be to sob into a camera and say, "I just keep seeing it again and again." The trauma would be effectively zero.
To be frank, this news story probably shows the precise degree to which the cult of self-esteem is pathological. These women have been insulated from the totally natural, human process of mutual social correction. Is the normalization of unhealthy behavior a good thing in a society? I'm not saying a restaurant waiter is necessarily the right place to receive said correction from, but when a waiter commenting on your obesity is deemed a social violation of sufficient scale to warrant news time? Something is wrong. |

| 'Big nose' is a bad example use in this marlakey. Those girls have to live with 'too fat to f***' tauntings. 'Big nose', according to urban legends corresponds to BIG you-know-what. Who in this world would take 'too big to f***' as an insult? In 'which is a worse put-down' contest, it's no contest. What Jeff the waiter should have said/double down/lied is that he likes fat girls. |

Interesting thoughts. It is a peculiar characteristic of the USA, perhaps.
An example: back in the states I was in the office talking to a coworker about a cat my buddy had growing up. "This guy's cat was soooo FAT, you can't even believe how fat this guy's cat was man...", when I noticed these two massive female analysts glaring at me over their cube walls like they wanted to kill. After some reflection I realized these two chicks were actually inserting their own self-esteem into random office conversations they overheard...in their minds the word "fat" should have actually been removed from the dictionary, so they wouldn't have to think about the truth. Something not quite right there.
That said, it's probably not Jeff's place to do anything other than serve them their 3x coke and fries. |

In any proper Korean establishment disrespect for a customer would never happen.
Although I'm sure some Dave's people are now going to argue about how customer service in Asia is such a disgraceful atrocity...  |
