Looking for an easy, slightly offbeat, & warm getaway for a week in february. My preliminary research brings up Kuching (Sarawak, Borneo).

Looks nice. Never been to Malaysia. Interests: nature, culture, a bit of beach, beer, & just about anything colorful & different. Seems like a decent base for some interesting day or overnight trips too. Might be rainy.

Anyone been?

Great city and region. Have been there a few times (albeit not for 8 or 9 years now). You're right about the day trips. Can check out the orang utans, head up the river into the jungle a bit. Bako National Park has some great and easy hikes, although loads of snakes, and if raining can get a little leechy - some of the most annoying monkeys on earth, too. Were you to have a couple of weeks Mulu Caves further north are brilliant. well worth the trip.
It's a very Chinese part of Malaysia, not as much Indian influence as the peninsula, so unfortunately that awesome Indian food that Malaysia is famous for is a little harder to come by.
I got a tattoo done here....

If you're interested/brave enough try the traditional way of tattooing, lol.

Have you been to both? Differences? Kuching looks pretty sweet the more I look into it. (Not big into shopping.)

I personally didn't care for K.K. Granted I was there 10 years ago, but found it to be a largely get in, get out type of place. The tourist attractions all seemed to be 8~10 hours out of town, unlike Kuching where you could base yourself in the city and do day trips galore.
Kuching has a kind of charming, colonial feel about it. Really feels like the Brits had considerable influence, while K.K is grungier, agricultural, and riddled with illegal scumbag types who've snuck across the border from Indo tending to glare and make smart assy type comments to passersby.
The islands off the coast that T.A.R Park are quite nice, but from memory were quite expensive to visit.
Sarawak blows Sabah out of the water in every way in my opinion.

Thanks for your input, lemak. My instinct also tells me I've stumbled upon an intriguing destination. I'm gonna go ahead & book my flights.
