Sen. Daniel Inouye, the second-longest serving senator in American history, died Monday evening at the age of 88 of "respiratory complications," according to his staff.
The Hawaii Democrat had been hospitalized since early this month due to respiratory problems. At the time of his death he was the longest serving lawmaker in the Senate and the upper chamber's president pro tempore, making him third in the line of presidential succession.

By the standards of US senators, he kept a fairly low profile. I don't think I ever heard him speaking in relation to anything unrelated to Iran-Contra, and only read about him in non-IR contexts a handful of times. His chairing of those hearings certainly left a memorable impression, though.

Was a genuine war hero! Seemed to do a good job representing his constituency. Not an ideologue and rarer seemed honest. Good Man. |

Glad that you mentioned this. I just found it out myself by chance about a month ago, but yes, he was a true hero.
"He was awarded a Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor. Senator Inouye lost his arm charging a series of machine gun nests on a hill in San Terenzo, Italy on April 21, 1945." |
