This is an interesting result. It will be something to watch the reaction as she is the daughter of ex-dictator Park Chung Hee. While her father did put Korea in the economic rails to success, he was also quite an oppressive ruler.

Still, her announced policies are not all that different from her oppoment, Mr. Moon, when it comes to welfare (expansion). It will be nice to see what her election does for the status of woman in the workforce in Korea.

Yes, this is interesting. Her father ruled like Sadam Hussein did. He wasn't above having people tortured and murdered. He was also very pro-US and strongly opposed President Carter's proposal to withdraw all US troops from Korea. His life ended when he was assassinated by the KCIA. She is Korea's first female president and promises to help advance women's rights in this male dominated society.

Rivalries simmered among his staff. U.S.-Korea relations soured under the pall of a Korean-led Congressional bribery scandal in Washington and President Jimmy Carter's obsessive desire to pull American troops out of Korea

Park Jung Hee was not pro US at all. He and Carter hated each other. He didn't like the US or foreigners and used nationalism and xenophobia to get Korea's people focused on industrialization.

Not sure I agree with the first part, but the second part is fairly bang on.
