For all those people who say South Korea is skewing the numbers:

But since YouTube can be accessed from all over the world, wouldn't Asia be responsible for a significant chunk of the $870,000? The countries with the second and third-highest views of the video are Thailand and South Korea.
"Ads rates vary depending on which country the video is played. Developed countries have higher ad rates and developing countries lower," said Brian Suh, head of YouTube Partnership in Seoul.
And the country with the most views of "Gangnam Style?" The United States.

Not surprising since over 300 million people live in the US.

How many live in South Korea? 48 million.

Again, no one isn't saying that Gangnam style isn't a global phenomenon. (God I sound like a broken record)

Let's see a break down of views based on population. We need real statistics dammit! Laughing

I strongly feel that based on population, South Korea would likely have the highest ratio. Not surprising since the video is by a bloody Korean.

But how high is this ratio and compared to others are there any irregularities which would suggest a possible skewing the numbers?

Furthermore, given that there have been almost a billion views, does this possible skewing have any serious influence or is it marginal?

(this is a fact even I am willing to concede)

This is the best I could come up with, and these numbers are two months old.

An analysis was completed on the MV of PSY's "Gangnam Style" uploaded to YouTube from July 15th to September 28th. It was revealed that YouTube members representing 222 nations have viewed the clip, with the top five as follows:

United States - 59,969,000 views
South Korea - 23,698,000 views
Thailand - 21,145,000 views
Malaysia - 12,672,000 views
Brazil - 11,573,000 views

Following close behind were Canada, England, Australia, Taiwan, and the Philippines, rounding out the top ten. Nations that made surprising appearances on the top 100 chart include Mongolia (904,000 views, 47th overall), Iceland (284,000 views, 65th overall), Trinidad and Tobago (289,000 views), Malta (101,000 views), and Guam (80,000 views).

In particular, the number of views generated by Mongolia is almost five times the number of registered internet users in the country, while the number of views generated by Iceland almost surpassed the total population of the country.

Meanwhile, "Gangnam Style" also picked up popularity in Africa, with rankings as follows:

South Africa - 440,000 views, 58th overall
Morocco - 279,000 views, 66th overall
Egypt - 109,000 views, 79th overall
Tunisia - 93,000 views, 85th overall
Algeria - 53,000 views, 100th overall

Additionally, 45 countries have generated more than 1 million views for the video, while 82 countries have generated more than 100,000 views. Currently, the number of views for the music video on YouTube has exceeded 400 million, while the number of videos that use "Gangnam Style" as music has exceeded 33,000.

Would you mind providing a link to where you got those stats? Just curious as my previous attempts failed.

But if we look at the top 5 countries downloads as a % of population

(1) USA - 19%
(2) S. Korea - 48%
(3) Thailand - 32%
(4) Malaysia - 43%
(5) Brazil - 6%

Interesting.......I was actually expecting Korea's % to be higher.

It should be noted that music downloads in Korea are exceedingly cheap compared to the rest of the world. As the article stated- Koreans mostly use download plans that let you have near-unlimited downloads for like, 10 bucks a month, working out to a price of pennies per song. This means pretty much everyone with a plan, which is pretty much everyone under 40, will download a song like Psy's because its near effortless to do so.

As an aside...
Korea's music industry model has always favored the low-cost model and seems to understand the nature of the internet. Back in the 90s CDs were usually 7-8 dollars each and came loaded with extras- Posters, postcards, interview stuff, etc. and they were often packaged in an original fashion. They also seemed to understand that the mp3 was the future of music pretty quickly and understood that the fight against piracy is a losing battle unless you make it easier and cheaper to download legitimately, rather than try pathetic actions to persuade people to buy 17 dollar CDs. They also oriented themselves to understanding that the album would no longer be the dominant source of revenue, rather merchandising and performances are to be.

The US record industry, while still great at turning out artists, was just an absolute dinosaur when it came to the digital revolution. It took the tech industry to pull its pants out of the fire.

That's great but who is still watching it? There are some people pretty late to the party it seems.
