Hello Fellow Dave's ESL Forum Members,
This is my first year working at a private hagwan as an English teacher in South Korea. I do have prior experience in the United States working as a University Professor and a Teaching Assistant at a K-12 school each for 1 year. I will have a total of 3 years of teaching experience after this year.
My education includes my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology and Juris Doctorate degree in Law. I worked as an attorney in the U.S. but did not like practicing law and wanted to teach in a foreign country. I really enjoy teaching at a hagwan but my goal is to teach at a University next year. My current contract ends in August 2013 and I would like to find a position at a University after my contract ends. I have a goal to work at a University full-time and at a hagwan part-time.
My questions are the following:
1. With my work experience and Education how difficult will it be for me to find a position at the University level?
2. When should I start applying for the University positions with my contract at my current hagwan ending in August 2013?
3. Do I need to have an Employment Agency help me find a position?
4. Is it possible to work at a University full-time and a Hagwan Part-time?
I appreciate all of your advice and help!
Thanks!

1) Difficult but not impossible. One year in a hagwon, unrelated academic credentials and contract ending mid year aren't in your favor.
2) December 2013 along with the rest of the applicants looking for new uni jobs (starting March 2, 2014).
3) yes, unless you have connections or friends who work in a uni. It is all about who you know and more importantly, who knows you.
4) Not impossible BUT you need permission from your primary employer (visa sponsor) and there are some other hoops to jump through. Odds are against you.

There will be quite a lot of uni jobs starting in the 2nd semester September 2013 - if you can be available for interviews - you could transition to one of these instead of having to wait until March 2014.. The jobs get posted anytime from May to July
But like it's been said - you may find it hard with that CV. |
